3 hours Location Greater Class size 1 to 12 (public classes), 6 to 20   £60 (£60 for Public; £60 for Private. £70 per class surcharge applies for private classes)

Join me for a fun and creative day at my botanical dyeing workshop, where you'll learn to make your very own silk scarf! In this hands-on activity, you will learn the fascinating art of natural dyeing and create your own beautiful silk scarf using botanical materials.
The workshop begins with a glass of fizz while I share a little about my journey as a designer and my passion for botanical dyeing. After the introduction, you will learn how to dye your own 60cm x 60cm silk scarf using the bundle dyeing method. This is a natural dyeing technique that creates beautiful prints from flowers, petals, leaves, and extract dyes.
Your bundle will then be steamed to draw out and fix the colour. While this magical process takes place, you will learn how to print onto a gift card using flower pounding, or 'Tatakizome' – an ancient Japanese technique of hammering plants to create a print.
You'll finish the day with not only a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind silk scarf but also a unique botanical card. This workshop is a wonderfully rewarding experience, showing you how to capture the beauty of nature in fabric and on paper.
What you'll get
  • Glass of fizz or sparkling soft drink
  • All materials are supplied on the day, such as natural dyes, flowers, silk scarf, etc.
  • Apron and gloves are supplied on the day.
  • Take home a dyed silk scarf and a printed greeting card.

  • 5/5 from Janet, attended Oct 2026: This was a lovely gentle therapeutic workshop with the opportunity to discover new skills. Claire is very knowledgeable and guided us well. My silk scarf and printed card are beautiful. A great way to spend the afternoon.
  • 5/5 from Lisa Bakker, attended Oct 2026: Excellent class. Everyone was friendly and the teacher Claire was a delight and really good at explaining things. We were all delighted with our scarves and card.
  • 4/5 from Barbara Elizabeth Dewhurst, attended May 2026: The teacher was good & knowledgeable but I think she realised during the session, what we'd thought at the start, that 14 is not a manageable number in that small room! Moving people's chairs in front of us to access our table is not ideal, & it was difficult for her to give the necessary attention to everyone, & it was no surprise that the class ran over. As an ex-trainer myself, for such a practical session, 8 would have been ideal, 10 maximum. Having said that, we enjoyed it, we managed to cover what we were expecting to (although the cards felt a bit rushed) & we came away with some lovely scarves.....although I'm probably happier with mine than my friend is with hers, which is a shame as it was a gift from me to her! Purchasing the gift cards worked ok eventually, when I realised the price had increased since I'd bought them. Teacher was lovely & would recommend the session, don't want to sound too negative but give some constructive advice! Thank you.
  • 5/5 from Helen Pickavance, attended Oct 2025: Lovely, friendly and knowledgeable teacher. The botanical dying process was so interesting and a really mindful and creative experience. All of our scarves turned out beautiful and individual. Definitely recommend!
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Pepper, attended Jul 2025: Such fun! Claire is lovely. It was so relaxing taking the afternoon to choose dried flowers to dye a silk scarf. So happy with the result. And then more fun picking fresh flowers to make a home-made card. Highly recommend. And a soft drink or prosecco on offer too!

I am Claire the creative force behind Three Storey Design, a brand born in Autumn 2022, South Manchester.
After 23 years as a clothing designer, I decided to embark on a new adventure. I took time away from the fast-paced fashion industry to reconnect with the world of craft, a space where I could again work with my hands and embrace the creative freedom I had missed.
Inspired by nature, I love to use traditional techniques to create vibrant colours and prints derived from local botanical sources. My interest extends beyond design, recognising the important role that nature plays in supporting our wellbeing – a value that has always been central to my life.
At Three Storey Design, I design, dye, and produce handcrafted products using natural botanical extract dyes, flowers, and plants on silk and cotton fabrics. I hand-dye and sew bespoke accessories between her home studio and Studio 16 at the Manchester Craft & Design Centre.
I also proudly host Natural Silk Dyeing Workshops at the Manchester Craft & Design Centre and other recognisable locations across Greater Manchester. These workshops, designed for groups, private parties, and corporate events, offer a unique opportunity for participants of all skill levels to create beautiful hand-dyed silk scarves. Attendees learn ancient techniques, Bundle Dyeing and the traditional Japanese art of Tatakizome, or flower pounding.
