Beginners Photography Workshop in Manchester: Learn to Use Your Camera
Ready to stop relying on automatic mode and start taking photographs with confidence?
Whether you've just bought your first camera or have been taking photographs for years without quite understanding how to get the results you want, this hands-on beginners photography workshop will help you get to grips with the basics and start seeing the world differently.
Join me, Priti, for four practical hours exploring photography in Manchester. We'll break down the essential techniques, put them into practice and explore how small changes to your settings, composition and approach can make a real difference to your photographs.
From portraits and architecture to landscapes and street photography, you'll have the opportunity to experiment with different subjects, ask questions and develop your skills in a relaxed, supportive environment.
No previous photography experience is needed. Just bring your camera, your curiosity and a willingness to learn.
What you'll learn
  • Understand your camera: Get to grips with the key settings and features, so you know what your camera can do and how to use it.
  • Master the exposure triangle: Learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together to control exposure and influence the look of your photographs.
  • Take control of your settings: Understand when to use automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes, and how to make more deliberate creative decisions.
  • Improve your composition: Explore techniques such as leading lines, the rule of thirds, framing and perspective to create more engaging images.
  • Work with light: Learn how natural and available light affect your photographs and how to make the most of different lighting conditions.
  • Explore different types of photography: Practise photographing portraits, architecture, landscapes and street scenes, discovering how to approach different subjects.
  • Build your confidence: Experiment with your camera, ask questions and learn to understand why a photograph works rather than simply hoping for the best.
  • Start developing your own style: Discover new ways of looking at everyday surroundings and find the techniques that work for you.
Learn by doing, not just listening
This isn't a workshop where you'll spend hours sitting through technical explanations.
We'll combine straightforward tuition with practical exercises, giving you time to try out the techniques as you learn them. I'll be on hand to answer questions, help you work through anything you're struggling with and offer guidance as you practise.
You'll leave with a better understanding of your camera, a stronger foundation in photography and practical skills you can continue developing long after the workshop.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is designed for complete beginners and anyone who wants to build a stronger foundation in photography.
Perhaps you've recently invested in a DSLR or mirrorless camera and aren't sure where to start. Maybe you tend to leave your camera on automatic because the other settings feel overwhelming. Or perhaps you enjoy photography as a hobby and want to understand how to improve your images.
We'll work through the fundamentals at an approachable pace, without assuming you already know the technical stuff.
You can bring a DSLR, mirrorless camera or smartphone. If you're bringing a smartphone, we'll adapt the practical exercises to the controls and features available on your device.
Learn with a professional photographer
I'm Priti Shikotra, a Manchester-based professional photographer with over 10 years of experience across music, portraits, events and commercial photography.
My work has appeared in *Kerrang!* and *NME*, and I've worked with organisations including the British Museum, Manchester Museum and Factory International.
I've spent years photographing everything from musicians and live performances to portraits and events, working in all kinds of environments and lighting conditions. I'm passionate about sharing the practical knowledge I've gained along the way and helping other people become more confident with photography.
I also deliver photography workshops for individuals, groups and businesses. My teaching style is friendly, conversational and practical, with an emphasis on helping you understand the techniques rather than memorising complicated rules.
There are no silly questions, and you don't need to arrive knowing anything about photography. We'll start with the basics and build from there.
Small-group learning with individual guidance
Public sessions are limited to a maximum of four participants, giving you plenty of opportunity to ask questions, practise at your own pace and receive individual guidance.
After the workshop, you'll receive a PDF guide to help you revisit what you've learnt, along with access to a private Facebook group where you can continue engaging with the photography community.
Private workshops are also available for groups looking for a tailored photography experience.
