Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Lesley Knight, attended Jul 2026: Granny square. Our teacher Scooby was excellent, I’ve been on another crochet course with her before and I can honestly say that she is attentive, gives clear instructions, will adapt a stitch/technique so that you can achieve and feel proud of what you have made. SO MUCH FUN! Looking forward to booking another Lesley Knight
  • 5/5 from Val Naylor, attended Jul 2026: This session was great. The tutor was able to get us all to be able to crochet a square by the end - only 1 hour - and it was excellent value. I would recommend to anyone with a little bit of crochet knowledge
  • 5/5 from Julie Porter, attended Jun 2026: Excellent class. Brilliant tutor (Susan or Scooby) who made it fun and was very clear and informative. Well worth the cost - thoroughly recommended
  • 5/5 from Karen Gathergood, attended Apr 2026: really fun class. teacher Scooby went at our pace and was patient giving me confidence even when I made a mistake. She was informative without overloading us with information and answered any questions we had. Really pleased with my finished granny square. A lovely way to spend a Saturday morning
  • 5/5 from Darren Ings, attended Mar 2026: I was lucky enough to have a one-on-one class today as I was the only one booked. Scooby was great at showing me her technique for the granny squares and to help me find my way when I got stuck. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Elizabeth, attended Dec 2025: Crochet Granny Squares - I really enjoyed it, but I wish it could have been 2 hours. One and a half hours isn’t long enough, there wasn’t enough time to go through the start of the granny square again. The teacher Scooby was great, she’s very good at explaining, even though she had a bad cold.
  • 5/5 from Laura Besley-Piggott, attended Aug 2025: Really enjoyed the class. Went at my pace, felt no pressure to go faster. Teacher was really friendly and answered any questions and helped when I went wrong.
  • 5/5 from Liz Sanders, attended Jun 2025: All excellent. Would highly recommend. Thank you.
  • 5/5 from L Nettleton, attended May 2025: Our teacher, Scooby, was lovely and really patient with my friend & I. My friend was a complete beginner so we started with the basics. The time went really quickly. We got one to one help and lots of tips. We are going to book a further session. Thank you We really enjoyed the workshop
  • 5/5 from Sophie Medway, attended Jan 2025: This was a very useful class and the teacher was very good at explaining the the steps.
  • 5/5 from Lesley Rutherford, attended Jan 2025: Charlie was amazing, very patient and helpful and the 90 minutes flew past! Instruction was very easy to follow and I managed to complete a small granny square within the class!
  • 5/5 from Claire Davey, attended Dec 2024: A great teacher with the time and patience to teach me the steps. Super friendly and was just a really nice group that helped the overall experience. Was really pleased with the outcome of my "granny square" attempt but at least its a starting point to allow me to progress and get more practice.
  • 5/5 from Emma Couch, attended Nov 2024: My daughter loved this class and is now able to confidently do granny squares. The trainer was fantastic-very helpful and patient.
  • 5/5 from Samantha Brooks, attended Nov 2024: How helpful the teacher was. Would like to have chosen own coloured yarn. All good thou
  • 5/5 from Claudia Tinnirello, attended Nov 2024: I had an amazing time at learning granny squares and now feel so much more confident at my croquet skills. The tutor was really lovely and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
  • 4/5 from Allison Hawkins, attended Sep 2024: Very good. I was given plenty of help and advice. I just wish the instructions i was given to take away included a guide to the actual stitches as I'm a complete beginner and I cannot remember what a slip stitch is or how to do it. Nevertheless I thoroughly recommend Hobbycraft. The staff are super helpful and encouraging of everyone and their crafts.
  • 5/5 from Joyce Gregory, attended Aug 2024: The instructor was very helpful and patient with us. My granddaughter and I really enjoyed the session.
  • 5/5 from Donna, attended Jul 2024: Excellent private class, we had previously completed crochet for beginners just a few weeks prior with Charlie and were delighted to return and have a follow on class and find it was with Charlie again, wonderful lesson, fabulous teaching, my mum & I were made to feel at ease, and had a lovely relaxed lesson learning skills to complete granny squares and build on the Knowledge previously gained. We were supplied with yarn, hook and snips and there were all fabulous, adjusting from our 8mm & chunky to 5mm hook and cotton yarn took a bit of getting the hang of but Charlie was patient and helpful, really cheering us on and making us both feel very accomplished. Both my mum and I came away ready to craft (more yarn purchased before we left!) and we would definitely attend classes again, I hope to see some seasonal classes (perhaps a Halloween or Christmas inspired crochet class!) we would be there in a flash. Can’t praise Charlie enough! Amazing lesson and lovely setting being a bit tucked at the upper back of store keeps you away from the main flow of shoppers so it’s peaceful. All the staff we spoke to that day and who served us in store had so much knowledge and time to help us. Really a wonderful experience. We shall be back soon!
  • 5/5 from Anny Warren, attended May 2024: Me and my mum booked a private 'granny squares' crochet workshop. It was great, we had plenty of time to learn how to do it and didn't feel rushed. We came away with skills to make a granny square and also more knowledge about crocheting in general. The lady who taught us, Scooby, was lovely. My only criticism is that the 'snips' we were given didn't work at all!
  • 5/5 from Stella Chotou, attended May 2024: Good explanation of technique and terminology used. I was able to put the knowledge into use straight away and finally managed not only to understand a crochet pattern but finish a granny square!
  • 5/5 from Angela, attended Mar 2024: The granny square workshop was excellent. Everything was provided, and Scooby was fantastic. She made it very easy to learn the technique. This is the second workshop I have done with Scrooby and I highly recommend her courses and look forward to the next one.
  • 5/5 from Maria-Clare Lush, attended Mar 2024: This was my second workshop with Scooby and she is awesome. I can now make a granny square.
  • 5/5 from Emma Checksfield, attended Dec 2023: Scooby was a wonderful lady - teaching us carefully so that it felt possible. I will practice then book in for a 1/1 with her.
  • 5/5 from Lynn van den Broek, attended Dec 2023: Really good workshop. Just the right amount of people. (4) anymore & there would have been many. Scoobie as patient & knowledgeable as ever. Such a lovely lady, perfect for teaching. I will be booking again.
  • 5/5 from Sally Darby, attended Aug 2023: Really nice quiet venue at the back of the shop. Lovely wool colours and gift bag to take equipment home. Scooby was so experieced and patient. Came away with lots of new tips. And had fun!
  • 5/5 from Clare Kiefer, attended Jul 2023: The teacher Scooby was excellent. She tailored the class to our individual ability. She was very patient and extremely helpful. Would like to have another class taking to the next level. Following a pattern?
  • 5/5 from Jacqueline Widick, attended Jul 2023: Scooby Sue was our teacher and she was superb! Very patient, great humour and paid attention to all of us individually manicure we were all happy throughout the workshop and explaining different techniques to suit individual wants. Venue was perfect for the workshop, and also allowed other customers to see and ask questions. My works was the crochet granny square and although a refresher for me was aimed at those who never did one before. The granny square is the natural next step in crochet and very versatile for many projects. As Scooby said there is no such thing as the perfect granny square and there are many variations depending on preference and her explanations and demonstrations were spot on and even suggested using a Size 4 hook instead of a Size 5 hook on blended cotton is easier to work. As to materials it was the Hobby craft Everyday Basic Cotton Blend that while very pretty I personally could not get on with but the other 2 ladies did fabulous with it. Scooby did offer to exchange it out but I declined as it was what came with the workshop. I highly recommend this workshop as either a beginner in granny square or as a refresher course to anyone. I will book the next workshop to connect granny squares.
  • 5/5 from Lynn Bull, attended Jul 2023: Previously attended the Beginner's Crochet workshop and it was great to take it a step further and make something requiring a little more thought and skill. Fabulous instructor (Scoobie) was very patient with us. I look forward to the next step in a future workshop!
  • 5/5 from Helen Bayliss, attended Jun 2023: I had an excellent morning learning to crochet a granny square with Scooby. She adjusted the learning to ensure I understood each element and had endless patience for my questions. A great way to spend a morning and learn a new skill. I highly recommend it.
