Batik Art Class: Seashell Symphony

Create your own piece of the ocean on silk at this batik painting class in Salford.

3.5 hours

Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 1 to 6
  £50

Escape to the seaside for a few creative hours in this relaxing batik painting on silk workshop, where you'll create your own Seashell Symphony – a beautiful silk painting inspired by shells, seawater, and sunlight.
Never tried batik before? You're in exactly the right place – there's no need to know how to draw, and no painting experience required. You'll be guided step by step throughout, so you can simply enjoy the process and watch the magic unfold on the silk.
You'll start with a seashell composition, getting to know the cold batik technique and learning how to use resist lines to shape and contain flowing colour. Then comes the best part – adding paint. Silk paints flow and blend in surprising, magical ways, and you'll work with ocean blues, turquoises, sandy tones, and warm highlights as you learn to build soft gradients, depth, light, and shadow.
Everyone starts from the same seaside theme, but no two pieces ever turn out the same. You'll choose your own palette and details, so your finished piece reflects your personal style and mood – and there's no need to worry about mistakes, as batik has a wonderful way of turning little surprises into part of the charm, with support and encouragement on hand throughout.
All materials are provided – just bring yourself and your curiosity. You'll leave with a finished, original piece of silk art made entirely by your own hand. Whether you come solo or bring a friend along, this is your chance to slow down, play with colour, and take a little piece of the sea home with you.

Hello! I’m Elena McLaren, and I specialize in the beautiful art of batik.
My creative journey began in Europe, but I truly found my calling in Manchester, where I studied Art and Technology at MANCAT College and later earned a degree in Visual Arts from the University of Manchester. I also continued my artistic education in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Macerata.
My introduction to batik came during a challenging period while I was caring for my mother. It was then that I discovered this fascinating silk-painting technique, which quickly became my passion. Over the years, I have trained with renowned masters, participated in international exhibitions, received awards, and developed my own artistic style. My work has been exhibited internationally, including on platforms such as Saatchi Art and Artmajeur, and I have been a member of the Eurasian Art Union since 2021.
One of the greatest joys of my work is sharing my knowledge and experience through workshops. I have taught batik to students of all ages and abilities, helping them discover the unique beauty of painting on silk. Whether creating a scarf, a decorative panel, or a framed artwork, I believe everyone has the ability to create something truly special.
I would be delighted to meet you and inspire you to explore your own creative potential through the wonderful art of batik!
