Led by an Arab artist, this welcoming workshop offers a colourful and accessible introduction to the beauty, history and meaning of Arabic art.
You will be painting a professionally pre-drawn Arabic calligraphy design on canvas. This is a guided painting workshop, so you will not be expected to draw or create the calligraphy yourself. Everything is prepared in advance, making the session perfect for complete beginners.
What to expect:
  • Paint a beautiful pre-drawn Arabic word on canvas
  • Learn about the colours, patterns and history of Arabic art
  • Follow friendly step-by-step painting guidance
  • Personalise your artwork with your own colours and embellishments
  • Add luxurious finishing touches with gold or silver leaf
  • Enjoy Arabic music and the beautiful scent of bukhoor
  • Take home your finished canvas
No artistic experience is needed. Simply come along, relax and enjoy painting something beautiful and meaningful.
The venue: Dahlia Café, Burnage
Dahlia Café offers a warm and welcoming setting for a relaxed afternoon of creativity. Food and drinks will be available to purchase from the café, so you can treat yourself while you paint.

  • 5/5 from Aaliyah Ahmed, attended Aug 2026: I booked this Arabic calligraphy class at Bembe Cafe as part of my birthday celebrations, and I was so excited to spend the day painting with my friends in such a beautiful cafe setting. What made the experience even more special was Summayah herself. She genuinely went above and beyond to make sure everything was as I had hoped for and made the day feel so personal. When I walked in, the set-up was absolutely beautiful and so professionally done. Summayah had even prepared a birthday card for me, which honestly meant so much because she didn’t even know me beforehand, yet she had kindly gone out of her way to make me feel celebrated and welcome. The whole class had such a warm, wholesome and personal feel to it. We spoke about everything from life and love to creativity, and Summayah’s bubbly, kind and welcoming personality made everyone feel so comfortable, even though we had only just met her. I especially loved the process of choosing the Arabic calligraphy, deciding how we wanted to paint around it, and then being given a blank canvas to make completely our own. We all created such different and beautiful pieces, which really showed the individuality and creativity in each of us. It was such a mindful experience and honestly felt like a little escape from everyday life. The combination of painting, Arabic and meaningful conversations and such lovely energy made it an experience I’ll genuinely remember. Summayah was absolutely fantastic not only as a teacher, but in creating such good vibes throughout the whole class and so talanted with her own work and tips she shared to support us. I’m so grateful for such a beautiful birthday experience. 100% recommend this class to anyone looking for something creative, mindful and wholesome to do with friends, family or even on your own. Thank you so much, Summayah, for making my birthday so special. Alhamdulillah for such a lovely day!

Welcome to The Creative Society Manchester
Award-winning creative workshops, cultural experiences and seriously good events across Manchester!
The Creative Society Manchester was created with a simple idea:
Creativity should be for everyone.
Since then, we’ve welcomed thousands of people through our doors and delivered over 300 workshops and events, from intimate weekend art classes to large-scale cultural events, heritage workshops, private parties and creative experiences for some of the UK’s best-known organisations.
And you absolutely do not need to be an artist to join us.
Our workshops are relaxed, social and genuinely beginner-friendly. Come alone, bring a friend, plan a date or gather the whole group. We’ll give you the materials, teach you the techniques and help you create something you’re actually excited to take home.
A little different from your average art class:
One week you might be repairing pottery with gold in our Kintsugi workshop.
The next you could be learning medieval manuscript illumination, painting, exploring Islamic geometry and calligraphy or joining us for one of our bookish and cultural events.
We love traditional crafts, beautiful materials, fascinating histories and finding ways to make them accessible to modern audiences.
Many of our cultural and heritage workshops begin with an introduction to the history and meaning behind the art form, so you’re not simply making something. You’re discovering the story behind it too.
We also run creative socials, literary events, costume parties, murder mysteries, quizzes and themed evenings.
Basically, if it sounds creative, interesting or slightly unusual, we’re probably interested!
Meet Sumayyah
The Creative Society was founded by Sumayyah, an award-winning Manchester artist, creative facilitator and mindfulness instructor with a background in psychology and art psychology.
Her work spans contemporary art, traditional and heritage crafts, cultural programming and creative well-being.
Sumayyah has designed and delivered creative experiences for universities, cultural institutions, community organisations and major businesses, as well as hundreds of public workshops across Manchester, the UK and internationally.
At the heart of her practice is the belief that creative spaces should feel welcoming.
No judgement. No expectation that you already know what you're doing. No pressure to make something perfect.
Just good teaching, interesting people and the chance to make something.
Everyone is welcome
We know walking into a workshop alone can feel intimidating.
That’s why inclusion has always been central to The Creative Society.
Our sessions are designed to be welcoming to complete beginners, solo guests, experienced creatives and people who may not always feel comfortable in traditional art spaces.
We want you to be able to arrive exactly as you are, settle in and enjoy creating.
Find us across Manchester
Our workshops pop up in brilliant venues across the city, with regular sessions in Didsbury and collaborations with cultural organisations, universities, businesses and other Manchester spaces.
You’ll find everything from relaxed two-hour workshops to half-day masterclasses, private events, corporate experiences and wonderfully over-the-top themed nights.
Come for the art. Come for the history. Come because you need to get out of the house and do something completely different.
We’ll take care of the rest.
The Creative Society Manchester
Award-winning. Independent. Manchester made.
We hope to see you at a workshop soon.
