Join Award Winning Jewellery Makers, Pepper Tree Studio for an exciting jewellery making class where you will delve into the world of silver clay. Discover the key skills needed to create beautiful pieces of jewellery that you make yourself, finish and take home with you on the day.
Don't worry if you're new to silver clay - this workshop is perfect for beginners. Your experienced tutors will guide you through the process step by step, creating a tiered pendant as your first piece. We chose this because it involves a variety of key techniques. Once you've made this then you are free to make a second piece that either matches your first or is something totally different. Feel confident and at ease as you learn how to handle, shape, cut, and refine the silver clay to craft your own unique designs.
In this workshop, you will:
  • Learn how to handle and store silver clay
  • Roll out the clay for an even finish
  • Add textures and shapes to your pieces
  • Create moulds using moulding compound
  • Join components and refine your pieces
  • Learn how to drill your jewellery ready for a bail and chain
  • Learn how to fire your jewellery including torch firing (over 16’s only)
  • Polish and finish your jewellery
  • Use patina for intricate details
Once your pieces are finished we will show you how to attach a bail and a chain and after the class you'll be able to wear your jewellery or you can take home your finished pieces in a lovely jewellery box or pouch. If you want to continue your silver clay journey, we offer advanced workshops or provide Silver Clay kits for you to work at your own pace in the comfort of your own home.

FAQ

Is silver clay real silver?
Yes it is! Silver clay is tiny particles of recycled silver that has been blended with an organic binder which allows us to mould the silver clay like modelling clay or even putty. It is then fired in a kiln, or torch fired, and this burns off the binder and fuses the silver particles. And, there you have it! Real silver.
Can my silver be hallmarked?
Yes. The jewellery you make in this workshop can be sent for hallmarking at any of the UK Assay Offices. Just ask your tutor if you would like your jewellery hallmarked. There is an additional charge and it takes approximately 14 days turnaround.
Can I make a ring in this workshop?
Unfortunately no. This workshop is designed for those who have no previous experience of working with silver clay. When silver clay is fired, it is subject to a degree of shrinkage and this has to be taken into account when calculating the correct ring size. For this reason, we do not make rings in the beginner workshops but we do offer ring workshops as a more advanced session.

Do we break for lunch?
Yes we do. Although we have some food outlets a short drive away, we advise you to bring a packed lunch. We have a seating area outside or, if the weather is bad, we have another room where you can eat your food.
Are my children too young for this silver clay workshop?
We are now able to allow children aged 9 and over to enjoy the workshop although there are some restrictions. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a full paying adult and, due to the cost of the materials, we cannot offer any concessions for children. It may be worth noting that we do a group discount and this may be useful if you are a family of 4 or more. Just ask us for details. Under 16's will not be able to torch fire their silver, it will all be fired in the kiln, but they'll still be able to watch the torch firing demo.
What if I've not finished my piece before the end of the workshop?
Don't worry. If the workshop is due to end at, say 4pm, we wont kick you out the door at the stroke of 4pm. If your piece is nearly finished we can extend to hopefully get your piece all done for you to take away with you. If you've still got a lot of work to do, we can advise you on how to finish it at home or perhaps book for another session at the studio.
Who will be my award winning tutor?

He has had work exhibited at various galleries in the UK, including Hatton Garden, London's Jewellery Quarter and also showcased at major events in Poland and Japan. Richard was recently awarded the People's Choice Award for Collection of the Year in The Professional Jeweller Awards 2025.
