Free motion embroidery is a creative way to use a sewing machine to draw a design on fabric. It's also known as thread painting or thread sketching.
You can learn using your own sewing machine or use one of our machines.
All materials, experienced friendly tuition, and drinks and cake are included.
Small groups mean you will get plenty of support and be able to have the project tailored to where you are at on your free machine stitching adventure.
The workshop can include:
  • How to set up the sewing machine for freehand embroidery
  • Painted backgrounds and textile collage
  • Focus on landscapes, seascapes, abstract design, birds
  • Practise using embroidery hoops & stabiliser to “draw” with the sewing machine
  • Learn how to applique
  • Stitching over applique
  • Writing in stitches
  • Using water-soluble fabric to create stitched items
  • Quilting designs

What to bring
No requirements, but if you have your own sewing machine you would like to bring to learn with, then you're welcome to do so. However, you can use one of ours.

Helen started creating at an early age and went on to study applied textiles and become a qualified trainer.
A visual artist, Helen specialises in Textile & Mixed Media Art.
Her practice has an emphasis on upcycling and the use of innovative textile art materials and techniques. She embraces a wide range of practices including both hand and free machine embroidery, wet and dry needle felting, surface fabric design, and embellishment.
She also runs regular Creative Textile Workshops both at her own studio and for groups and events.
Helen gives inspirational talks, produces on-demand digital guidance, and blogs and creates kits for us to get creative at home.
Helen aims to bring some peace and play to our every day and believes the creative process can be therapeutic and is far more important than the finished product. She has been told that her sessions are "better than therapy"
