Join basketmaker Mary Lewis for this one-day beginner weaving course, which will introduce you to the ancient craft of basket making.
Mary's supportive, relaxed teaching style will guide you through the various stages of making your basket. You will gain an understanding of how the willow behaves as you weave and, after the final trimming up, you will have a useful basket you will be proud to take home. You will learn about the simple tools that are used in basketry and some basic weaving patterns that can be applied to a wide range of baskets in the future.
Using Somerset and homegrown willow, this basket is made by creating a frame and then weaving around it. This is one of the earliest forms of basket making, where the shape and size of the basket are dependent on the bent willow ribs that are added first. These baskets are lovely for displaying fruit or for collecting eggs.
All tools and materials will be provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting a bit grubby.
