Recent reviews of Traditional Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting Workshop: Monthly Floral
- 5/5 from Kirstie Weatherley, attended Oct 2026: Our teacher was Jasmine, who was lovely. Very welcoming, putting everyone at ease and so talented and knowledgeable. The two and a half hours went very quickly. It was a small group of six people so Jasmine was able to spend time with every individual giving person tuition. Very enjoyable class. Would recommend.
- 5/5 from Julia Hathaway, attended Aug 2026: This was a sumi-e workshop (Japanese brush and ink painting). I enjoyed the experience very much, the room was comfortable and there were 12 participants which is a very comfortable number. The teacher taught very well, she helped us by demonstration and personal tuition if required, and gave us some of the history of the items and techniques we were using. I particularly enjoyed learning about tending your brush and how the ink and paper become part of the meditative process and add to the impressionistic style. I didn't notice the time passing!
- 5/5 from Maria Robinson, attended Aug 2026: Really enjoyed the class. It’s my second workshop. Great atmosphere, great teacher. Looking forward to next workshop
- 4/5 from Nicholas Cooper, attended Aug 2026: I enjoyed the workshop, I haven'ta usied Japanese ink before, or their paper. It was interesting and well taught. Thank you.
- 5/5 from Sarah Hill, attended Jun 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed this class, and attended with no previous art experience. Jasmine was an informative, passionate guide throughout the session. I came away feeling refreshed and with artwork I was proud of. Would highly recommend these classes.
- 5/5 from Hazel Harkins, attended May 2026: Friendly welcoming tutor who explained everything clearly. Lovely materials to work with and plenty of paper.
- 5/5 from Anne O’Reilly, attended May 2026: Patient and attentive tutor. Enjoyable atmosphere.my skills in ink painting have improved and look forward to further improvement.
- 5/5 from Sojeong Park, attended May 2026: I really enjoyed the whole class. It had a very relaxing vibe, and I loved learning ink painting in such a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended!
- 5/5 from Kelly Vinall, attended May 2026: Jasmine was brilliant. Really knowledgeable and patient. It was really difficult to make the ink
- 4/5 from Isabel Morris, attended May 2026: Myself and two friends attended an Iris painting workshop. Jasmine was a kind and encouraging teacher, really enthusiastic about the history and philosophy of sumi e. The actual process was much more complex than first appearances suggest and we definitely learned to live with imperfections!
- 5/5 from Danica Petrovic, attended Apr 2026: I spent a relaxing morning learning about Japanese Sumi-e. Jasmine, our teacher, went through the techniques step by step and we produced a piece of work to take home. Jasmine was friendly and helpful in guiding us through all the practice work and then creating a final picture of a Camilla. I really enjoyed the workshop and plan do more.
- 5/5 from Maria Robinson, attended Apr 2026: Absolutely loved this workshop! I’m a total beginner and I came away with a lovely painting. Jasmine was brilliant, talked us through everything in a clear and informative way. I loved that we had to make our own ink using an ink stick! Will definitely be booking the next workshop
- 5/5 from Julie Baines, attended Apr 2026: Really enjoyed the class which went at a good pace and good clear instructions. However the parking was difficult and fraught. Looking forward to future workshops.
- 5/5 from Chloe Newton, attended Apr 2026: Very joyful process, great instruction and freedom to try as much as you want to do. Grinding the ink was very satisfying. Inspired me to buy the ink, brush and paper to have a go at home!
- 5/5 from Anne O'Reilly, attended Apr 2026: Very helpful teacher, well prepared and made sure we all enjoyed ourselves. I found the room to be very cold and parking was difficult.
- 4/5 from Champ Parekh, attended Apr 2026: Need to inform people of parking restrictions and where to park. Site owners need to lower the crib so as not to damage wheels on the car. Atmosphere was good but room was cold to start with. Maybe a small heater for ten minutes? Learnt how to apply pressure on the brush, how to add and remove water from brush and apply the ink. Would be great if sample ink brushes paper were given to take away to continue to practice.
Your teacher
Kapok House Sumi-e brings the serene beauty of Japanese ink painting to Altrincham and Didsbury, where delicate rice paper meets mindful brushstrokes that capture nature's quiet moments. Rooted in Zen philosophy, each stroke reflects your inner calm as you explore bamboo's gentle sway or lotus blossoms unfolding. Our beginner-friendly workshops welcome all ages and skill levels, including special sessions for children ages 7+ who love discovering ink's magic. You'll hold the Four Treasures (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone), learn fluid pressure and dilution, then lose yourself painting simple leaves to flowing forms in our peaceful studios. It's less about perfect pictures and more about presence.— Jasmine Lau, Kapok House
