Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Peter Brown, attended Sep 2026: My workshop with Emaile was lovely she was so patient and did not rush me. Very informative. Threading the machine, filling the bobbin, putting the bobbin in, tried various stitch types and lengths, made a button hole and looked at spare parts with the machine and oiling moving parts.
  • 5/5 from Giselle Bird, attended Aug 2026: Emilee was brilliant and helped me so much and answered all my questions
  • 5/5 from Debby Cummins, attended Apr 2026: Emalie is a good teacher to someone who is not a natural needle woman. She obviously understands patterns and is kind to a novice, explaining everything so I could understand it too.
  • 5/5 from Pamela Wilson, attended Feb 2026: Explained exactly what I wanted. Now I feel confident to try anything. A photo of my stitching a blanket submitted
  • 5/5 from Jane Woodhouse, attended Feb 2026: Emilia was truly amazing at the lesson, she took her time to understand our journey with our project, then checked how much we knew about the machine. Then she went through cottons, bobbins, machine functions. She has also in 3 occasions given me support in store and been so helpful. She is a great asset to your store and a wonderful person who loves to help.
  • 5/5 from Sarah Richmond, attended Feb 2026: Absolutely brilliant I would definitely recommend. Lovely lady who was very knowledgeable and helpful. I have an antique Singer sewing machine which she was able to show me things for and some I never knew about the machine. She also showed me on a modern machine additional features that can be achieved. Thank you so much for giving me back the confidence to use my Nanna’s machine and opening up new creative possibilities.
  • 5/5 from Christine Scrivener, attended Feb 2026: Intro to new sew machine. Gill was very helpful & relaxed. Took me through setting up machine. Explained all components etc. Had opportunity to test machine, & to solve a common problem which arose.
  • 5/5 from Laura Mole, attended Jan 2026: Emily was amazing. I had a list of questions and she answered all of them and more. She helped demonstrate and talked me through techniques. If I need any more help I will definitely be back in touch. Many thanks Emily.
  • 5/5 from Belynda Telford, attended Jan 2026: The lady teaching me was very informative, giving me all the basic details on how to use a sewing machine and how each tool works. She made sure I understood everything before rushing forward which I really appreciated because I can be a slow learner. We practiced setting up the machine and trying out different types of stitches. I really liked the practice of the zigzag stitch the most, because I know in the future that I will be practicing that a lot. I thank her and all the staff for being patient with me and helping me the best way I can possibly describe.
  • 4/5 from Arianna Presenti, attended Jan 2026: Gill was lovely and patient. She showed me first how to set up the sewing machine and then she let me do it. Then we started to sew and finally she taught me what I wanted to learn. Was lovely.
  • 1/5 from Israr Jan-Parker, attended Dec 2025: Sadly I turned up to my class and discovered the session had been cancelled. I did not receive an email nor a phone call (which would have been the helpful at such late notice). This was very inconvenient for me as I am living with brain tumour and have partial vision. I was dropped off at the venue and therefore had to wait around for a pick up. I completely appreciate that the teacher was ill. I would not expect them to turn up. However, adequate and suitable notification (phone call) to prevent inconvenience and anxiety to me would have been prevented.
  • 5/5 from Joy Colverson, attended Nov 2025: Emily, immediately made me feel comfortable. I hadn't used a sewing machine for over 50 years. She was encouraging and took the time to compare my sewing machine to the one we were using. I feel ready to get started again with my own machine.
  • 5/5 from Margaret Player, attended Oct 2025: Very enjoyable way to spend an hour of my time. Found the session informative and the teacher was kind and knowledgeable. All set in a relaxing atmosphere. Would recommend

  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Mar 2025: I received a gift voucher for this lesson for Christmas and I chose to learn how to make buttonholes. Emalie was brilliant, she explained very clearly how things worked, she made me feel very confident in my ability despite being a total beginner, and she even gave me tips for issues that I had not thought about. I was also able to show her my project and she provided some very good advice on that. The only reason I'm not giving a full five stars is because the booking process with a gift voucher was unnecessarily frustrating - every computerised step had to be followed up by a complaint for a member of staff to fix manually whatever had gone wrong. That said, customer service staff are quite good, I would book again, I was very happy with my lesson despite the difficulties in booking it.
  • 5/5 from Claire Alexander, attended Feb 2025: Chrissie was great, really put me at ease, she was easy to talk to, explained everything I wanted to know, went through the questions that I needed help with, demonstrated several techniques and gave me some ideas and pointers Room was spacious and pleasant, may have been useful if I could have bought my own machine as the model you had was working, Thank you, will think about doing it again soon.
  • 5/5 from Rachel Coventry, attended Feb 2025: Amazing! Brought my 1st sewing machine last week with Emalie help. So went back and did my 1st workshop with her. She showed us how to set up the machine, different techniques and even let us compare different machines. She wasn't at all fazed by us jamming the machine many times! There was no pressure to buy a machine at all, but we did end up getting one. Would definitely recommend, thank you very much!
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Jul 2024: Very pleased thank you, would highly recommend Chrissie answered all my questions and gave great advice ️
  • 5/5 from Angela Morrell, attended Jun 2024: I wanted to start using my new machine. Everything was great - teacher, venue, instruction were all superb. I made a cushion cover in an hour despite not using a machine in 40 years and came home and made another one because the instruction was so good! Definitely value for money. I will return after a bit more practice for my next class.
  • 5/5 from Abby Rowe, attended Jun 2024: My teacher was excellent, very knowledgeable and friendly and really listened to my needs. I wanted to try various machines to help me decide which one to buy. I’ve narrowed down my criteria well now. The only problem was that shoplifters have taken various bits from the shop floor machines and this meant that I couldn’t try the one I think might be the one for me. I am going back another day so I’ll get another chance. I’m really looking forward to trying a one step button hole!

I have learned so much and was so excited to get home and start! Everything was explained well and was easy to follow. My teacher Chrissie was so understanding of what I wanted to know and happily answered all of my questions! I have come away knowing how to use my machine and some samples to try out! Absolutely worth every penny! I will be back for more lessons!

Chrissy answered all our (very basic) questions and gave us the confidence to thread up our machine and start. After some practice we will be back for another class.
  • 5/5 from Debby Hutchinson, attended Sep 2023: Chrissie was brilliant and for a beginning she explained things simply. She also gave me tips which are easy to remember. I can’t praise Chrissie enough.
  • 4/5 from Caroline Morgan, attended Sep 2023: Gill is a lovely lady and made me feel relaxed. We went through two things I wanted to learn how to do and she was very patient with me and showed me how to get them right. I even brought home what I made. I was able to ask questions and also got advice on what products were best to use. Only one slight negative, I wasn't ask how much experience I had using a sewing machine but maybe that is something I could have put down in the comments before hand. Overall a good experience.
  • 5/5 from Ellen, attended Aug 2023: Chrissie was absolutely brilliant! She went through all my queries with me, helped me choose the perfect fabric for my pattern, and advised me on the extras I'd need. I left feeling so enthusiastic about my project and I can't wait to get started! Thank you, Chrissie!
