In this workshop, Ann-Margreth will teach you the fundamental skills of relief stone carving, showing you how to design and low-relief carve an abstract design inspired by pebbles, in stone. Using drawing and collage, you will explore relationships and perspective between forms, enabling you to find your chosen design to carve. You will explore the space between the two and three-dimensional using a range of processes, materials, tools, and techniques.
Before you start carving your design, Ann-Margreth will demonstrate the tools and basic stone carving techniques so you can feel ready to put a chisel on your stone and carve. She will explain the characteristics of a reductive process, which chisel to choose and why, how to create an even surface, and show the cutting of a clean edge and how to create layers in your carving.
You will observe the outline of pebbles through drawing and adjust your drawing according to the dynamic you want to create on your piece, using layering to create perspective within your piece. Once your relief is carved, Ann-Margreth will explain how polishing aspects of your shapes and looking at surface texture can help some forms stand out, depending on your desired finish of your piece.
You will leave this workshop with an understanding of the craft of stone carving, translating observation of a 3D form to drawing, and with the skills to compose a design for a relief using collage. You will have an abstract stone-carved low-relief piece.

New Brewery Arts is Cirencester’s creative heart — a vibrant cultural charity housed in the historic buildings of the former Cirencester Brewery.
After the brewery’s closure in 1937, the site fell into disuse and was nearly lost to demolition. Thanks to a visionary local group, two of the remaining buildings were restored and transformed into craft workshops, opening as Cirencester Workshops in 1978.
Its mission is to champion craft — making it, learning it, and supporting the people who do it. Its courses, workshops, makers’ studios, 100% UK-made craft shop, and café all contribute to a vibrant creative hub at the heart of Cirencester.
