If you've been sewing for a little while and want to build your dressmaking skills, this is the workshop for you. Come along to Stitching Kitchen for a hands-on day with fabric and thread, and learn how to tame slinky fabrics cut on the bias.
Emma Smith will be your teacher. You'll make a slip dress cut on the bias, the kind of piece that's made for parties. Emma will share her tips and tricks for a polished finish and a garment that flows across the body while fitting and letting you move freely. You can choose to make either the Simone Slip dress by Closet Core or the Pensee dress by Deer and Doe.
Over the day, you'll:
  • Choose the right size for your body
  • Get to grips with the theory behind bias cut sewing, and why it's so special
  • Learn how to handle slippery fabric while cutting out and sewing
  • Discover which machine settings give you the best finish
Emma studied Textiles at university and worked in childrenswear design before becoming a freelance sewing tutor over the last five years. She has a teaching and training qualification and a wealth of sewing knowledge, and she supports sewing studios and pattern designers across the country, so you'll be learning from someone who really knows her stuff.
By the end of the day, you'll have a slip dress you made yourself, plus the confidence to tackle bias cut projects long after the workshop is over.
Please note: this workshop takes place in our light and spacious first-floor studio at Stitching Kitchen, which is reached by stairs. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Hannah Thompson is a self-taught textile artist. She has been crafting since childhood. At school, she took a GCSE in textiles but didn't complete the course. Even back then, her love was to interpret buildings in stitch and appliqué. The idea of using textiles to represent such a solid structure really appealed and still does.
Hannah had left creativity behind through her early adult life until suffering a breakdown and divorce in 2015. A dear friend invited her to an embroiderers guild meeting, and it sparked an interest and a desire to learn. The speaker that night had been stitching into plastic bags—the sky really is the limit when it comes to textiles.
Since then, she has immersed herself in all things textiles, attending workshops and stitching in company through that process. She has joined Embroiderers Guild, the Quilters Guilds and latterly the International Association of Feltmakers. Being part of these organisations offers opportunities to learn and to exhibit.
Her business, “Stitching Kitchen, ” is now her main focus. She offers a friendly and inclusive environment to stitch in company and to learn new skills. At the start of the business, she thought she would make and sell textile art and handmade items, but as time progressed, she found that sharing her skills and offering adults the opportunity to play while learning textile-based crafts was what she really enjoyed. The business is now situated in commercial premises in Brackley, Northamptonshire (just off the M40 and not far from the M1) and now offers regular drop-in sessions, sewing and textile-based craft workshops.
