Learn the fundamentals of pottery wheel throwing in this comprehensive beginners' course, held in our bright and airy ceramics studio in Colindale.
Joining only five other beginners, you'll embark on a relaxing series of two-and-a-half-hour sessions guided by our experienced ceramics tutor, Jo. We will teach you the essentials from scratch, and repeat the fundamentals to give you a good grounding in the basics of throwing.
You will learn how to:
  • Prepare your clay correctly for throwing
  • Centre the clay on the wheel – a key skill!
  • Open the clay and pull up the walls to form vessel shapes
  • Turn and trim your pots for a professional finish before their first firing
  • Choose from a range of beautiful dipping glazes for your pieces, then collect them after our team has glazed them
Everything is provided for this course: the clay, all necessary tools and kiln firings for up to five of your favourite pieces created during the sessions. Should you make more pieces you love, any additional pots can be fired and glazed for a fee of £10 per pot to cover costs.
This small group size ensures plenty of individual 1:1 support as you master the techniques.
You'll complete the course having learned a fantastic new skill and with up to five pieces of functional, unique pottery to collect and enjoy.
Important note:
  • Six participants are required for the course to take place.
  • The minimum guest age is 14 years old.
  • Guests under the age of 16 years old, must be accompanied by a responsible adult; the adult is welcome to wait in our communal area during the class time if they prefer. Tutor Jo holds an enhanced DBS and has taught children and adults for over a decade.
  • Your completed, glazed pots will be ready for collection from our Colindale studio within 4 weeks from the end of the course.
