In our cosy studio in the north docks of Liverpool, I invite you to join this six-week silversmithing course, a unique learning activity designed for complete beginners. This workshop is for anyone with a sense of curiosity who wants to learn how to make beautiful jewellery with their own hands.
We’ll work with sterling silver, gemstones, and 24ct gold leaf across six weekly projects. My teaching philosophy is built around using traditional hand tools and understanding real techniques, without relying on fancy equipment or shortcuts. In this small group setting with a maximum of four students, you get the time and support you need to truly learn. Each student has a full tool set to use during the course, and you can even borrow a small take-home kit each week.
This isn't a rushed class; it's a slower, more personal way to learn. I'll be there to notice what’s working, help with what’s not, and explain the details that are easy to miss and can't be taught online – things like posture, pressure, and angles.
Over the six weeks, you will learn to make several pieces:
  • Week 1 - Tube set rings – Learn how to measure, cut, and shape silver into a ring, master basic soldering, explore texture, and add a subtle sparkle with a tube-set stone.
  • Week 2 - Sculptural earrings – Take your sawing, soldering, and forming skills further as you learn how to create elegant movement and understand balance in earring design.
  • Week 3 - Keum-Boo – Discover this ancient Korean gilding technique, applying 24ct gold foil to your silver using heat to create a matching pair of earrings or a pendant.
  • Week 4 - Pierced out pendant – You will melt silver offcuts, roll them into your own sheet, and practise piercing with fine saw blades to create depth in your design.
  • Week 5 and 6 - Bezel set stone ring or pendant – Learn to bezel set a semi-precious stone with a focus on precise soldering and shaping. You can also add decorative elements to make your piece more intricate.
I am passionate about how jewellery is taught, focusing on the proper techniques that have been used for decades. I don't just demonstrate and walk off; I watch you work, notice how you’re sitting, and see how you’re holding your tools. If something’s off, I’ll gently guide you and explain why it matters.
This experience will leave you with more than just a few lovely pieces of jewellery; it will provide you with a solid, confident understanding of how to make more, all on your own.

We are Britt and Andrew. Britt’s journey with jewellery making started in 2012 as a hobby that has slowly blossomed into what it is today - Noctua Jewellery & Workshops. Andrew joined Britt in September 2017 helping out with workshops and learning about the business.
Britt's love for jewellery started when she was a child and a relative bought her a beading kit. She delved in and out of jewellery making until she was 15 and finally discovered the holy grail of jewellery making: silversmithing. Much to her father’s delight, she purchased a blowtorch online and then began practising at home, continuously saving up for new tools and books. After many attempts, both failed and successful, she decided to find an apprenticeship to develop her skills, eventually finding one, 358 miles from home in beautiful Cornwall. Britt returned to Liverpool in February 2017 with a drive to give other people the joy of making their own silver jewellery.
