This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Michael Clark, attended Oct 2026: Kate was absolutely wonderful. She was incredibly knowledgeable, with an exceptional amount of experience, and explained everything in such an easy, relaxed, and approachable way. As someone with little to no sewing experience, I was particularly impressed by how she made what initially felt like quite complicated—or even completely unfamiliar—terminology and techniques feel straightforward and manageable. Her expertise really stood out, but she never made me feel out of my depth; she was friendly, patient, and encouraging throughout. I would definitely recommend Kate’s sewing class and would happily book with her again.
  • 5/5 from Lise Croft, attended Aug 2026: Kate did a bespoke class for my 14 year old daughter to help her to get started with free motion quilting. She was very knowledgeable and really explained things well for my daughter. An excellent workshop, thanks Kate.
  • 5/5 from Sasha Roxanne, attended Aug 2026: It was super fun! I was a beginner so I was shown how to use a sewing machine and sew some fabric for practice! The lady was super friendly and made me feel comfortable. She’d make sure I was sure and that I understood what she was showing me. Definitely coming again soon for another lesson ☺️

  • 5/5 from Rachel Crnomarkovic, attended Jun 2026: Another great workshop with Kate today. Fantastic tips advice and support. I could spend all day with Kate who is entertaining and makes the whole process fun. We covered ideas within cricut and used samples and she showed me some tips around my sewing machine. Having not used the machine for a long period it was just what I needed. Kate needs to set up ongoing regular workshops for teams to join which will no doubt be educational and fun and will attract many. Something the area is short of in this current climate. I would certainly be one to attend. Someone with such drive experience in her position is what new beginnings are all about.

  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Feb 2026: 14 year old wanted to know how to sew a sleeve into a garment. He learnt how to do this. Kate, the teacher at Brotherhood, Peterborough was very encouraging and he left confident about tackling the challenge on his own. He used paper and material supplied by Hobbycraft, small amount but enough to complete the task. The thing he liked most was the quiet calm atmosphere and Kate is very amiable and helpful.

  • 5/5 from Claire Shelbourne, attended Sep 2025: Kate is a very helpful, patient teacher. She was guided by my level and needs as well as advising and showing me helpful techniques. She guided me around my sewing machine which I will now have more confidence to use with the improved understanding I have of it as well as skills. Demo on in store machine was helpful as able to out and consolidate new knowledge and techniques learned. It was very disappointing that I was unable to use my Gift card to pay for this session. I very much enjoyed my one to one with Kate. I would be inclined to book more if I was able to use the card.

Kate was absolutely amazing and walked me through everything from what the different parts on the machine do, the different stitches, how to set up the thread... literally everything I was hoping for and more. I walked out smiling ear to ear with my new sewing machine and I'm so excited to continue building on what Kate has taught. Highly recommend - Kate is absolutely brilliant!

  • 5/5 from Maria, attended Jul 2025: I am very happy with may lessons. I learned to set up the machine, sew a bottom, zipper, how to read a pattern, …On my second lesson I made a little bag that is already in use. There is not any dull moment, and the lessons are very helpful and easy to understand. Having an experienced teacher is so useful that you do not have to struggle to find out how things work, and on the other side, you get a different perspective on how you see things. Am very thankful for the support I am getting. I recommend to anyone who has never tried. Maria

Kate was his teacher and he got on well with her, she listened to him and she gave him ideas on how to get started suggesting perhaps to make a picture first, using the stitches she'd shown him. Yes, the class was value for money and will probably book again so he can learn more.
