One-to-one Sewing Workshop

Join us in store and talk to a craft expert for tips and advice on your sewing machine or project!

1 hour Location Ipswich Class size 1 on 1   £28

Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Laura Hack, attended Oct 2026: Really interesting back to basis instructions in using a sewing machine. Karen the instructor was lovely and very knowledgeable about the different stitches and how to clean the machine etc. I managed to sew a button hole! As I’m self taught and literally use one stitch for hemming the kids school stuff this was an hour well spent. If you k ow your way round a machine it’s not for you.
  • 5/5 from Gabriela Lorens, attended Aug 2026: The teacher was lovely and explained how the sewing machine works really well. The class definitely gave me more confidence, and I now feel ready to purchase my own sewing machine and start practising at home. I really enjoyed the session!
  • 5/5 from Margaret Quinton, attended Dec 2025: Karen was my teacher, she was very patient. I had absolutely no idea how to prepare the bobbin or thread the needle. Managed after the second attempt. Went home and immediately did the same with my new machine. Would definitely recommend a one to one, particularly if no previous experience.
  • 5/5 from Frances Holley, attended Jun 2025: The teacher was really helpful. I needed advice on hemming trousers and shorts and tailoring trousers. I learnt more about my sewing machine which will be incredibly helpful for the future, as well as different stitches to use. I feel so much more confident with the projects I need to start and now know how to approach them in the right way, rather than my very unprofessional approach before.
  • 5/5 from Julie Ramsay, attended Dec 2024: To learn basics for my new sewing machine Great instruction from Karen I feel confident to use it now
  • 4/5 from Lucy Short, attended Oct 2024: Birthday gift for my niece who has her own sewing machine. Our teacher was very knowledgeable and super approachable, making it a fun session! We learnt the basic skills of how to set up and use the machine settings (as we are both new to this!) and how to make a buttonhole/put in a zip. I liked the chance to see it ‘in real life’ action, as makes learning so much easier and applicable!
  • 5/5 from Janette Fish, attended Sep 2024: Shirley was knowledgeable and patient. I learnt a lot andvit heloed mecto decide if i wanted to buy a new machine. Thank you
  • 5/5 from Nikki Adlington, attended Sep 2024: I wanted to learn how to use my sewing machine as I am not very good with instruction manuals and prefer to be shown. My lesson was with Karen who was very kind, informative and easy to speak to. She made me feel much more confident in being able to use my machine and in my stitching. I really liked the trial sewing material they had, which was like a worksheet with different stitches to try but on fabric. It was a really good idea and very helpful. Overall it was a very good experience and I would definitely recommend doing the class if you need some help with learning the basics of using a sewing machine. Thank you to all of the staff at Hobbycraft Ipswich, everyone was very kind, friendly and helpful, and a special thank you to Karen for being an outstanding teacher.
  • 5/5 from Kirsty Johnston, attended Aug 2024: I have wanted to learn to use a sewing machine for years. Karen was an excellent tutor. She was very patient with me as a complete novice. The day after our session I was able to show my husband how to set up our sewing machine and I made a cushion cover with a zip!
  • 5/5 from Alex Toms-Welsh, attended Aug 2024: I booked a one-to-one sewing class as I wanted advice on lining the crochet bags that I make. I'm new to machine sewing and still finding my way. Karen's gentle and friendly guidance soon put me at my ease and she had a couple of useful tips that I'm already putting into practice. She also taught me how to sew a button hole, which had baffled me up till then. All in all it was a positive experience and I'd definitely recommend these classes!
  • 5/5 from Sally Gifford, attended Jun 2024: Teacher was lovely, this was for my 12 year of daughter. Things covered, understanding patterns and how to read them. How to use the sewing machine, sew in zip and button holes.

  • 5/5 from Jessica, attended Mar 2024: I booked the class as I wanted to complete a play mat / dance mat I was making and I had got confused with the next steps when I researched it online. I instantly knew I’d made the right choice in booking the class as the expertise and knowledge Shirley and Karen have is fantastic. I learnt so many useful tips for making the playmat, and managed to sew a few sides myself with some help! I also learnt useful tricks for using the sewing machine and how to prepare the bobbin etc. I bought the pair of scissors after the class as they seemed very good. The class was excellent value for money and I couldn’t recommend it enough. I enjoyed it so much and the staff are incredible!

Trialled some of the stitch library and went through the accessories. Karen, and all the staff, were friendly and approachable and made me very welcome. It was worth the early start and price to come into store and have the one to one on what will be my next sewing machine.

  • 5/5 from Sharon Proctor, attended Jul 2023: Karen was brilliant. She explained everything I need to know about my sewing machine and being an accomplished sewer, was able to give me some sewing tips along the way. I came away feeling confident about setting up my machine, trying new stitches and starting my very first sewing project. Would definitely look to do another in-store session, either one to one again or in a small group - perhaps on how to cut out a pattern as this is a daunting prospect as a new sewer! Thank you so much Karen.
