Repair Your Knitwear (Darning) Workshop

Learn how to mend your jumpers and socks either invisibly or creatively

2 hours Class size 2 to 5 guests       £20

In this workshop, you acquire the skills to repair your beloved garments, ensuring their longevity and sustainability. You will learn how to choose the right methods of repair, select suitable yarn, and utilise darning tools like a darning mushroom. Through TV hands-on practise, you'll master techniques such as simple weave repair, duplicate stitch for reinforcement, and decorative mending using colour and embroidery stitches. A very wide range of colours are available to colour match your garment should you want to try your hand at an invisible darn.
  • Discover the appropriate repair method for your knitwear
  • Select the correct yarn for the job
  • Learn to use darning tools effectively
  • Master simple weave repair and duplicate stitch
  • Understand how to incorporate colour and embroidery for decorative mending
Please bring along your damaged knitted items, and though you may not complete multiple repairs during the session, you'll receive guidance on mending the remaining pieces. If you lack items for repair, a practise item can be provided.
By the end of the class, you'll leave with newfound skills, a beautifully repaired garment, and a sense of accomplishment. Private sessions and one-on-one classes are available for those seeking a more personalised experience. Please note that my friendly Labrador dog may be present, so consider this if you have allergies or preferences.

My name is Sandra and I learned how to knit when I was seven. I have a very vivid memory of standing in the school playground knitting needles in my hands and a ball of wool in my pocket! Crochet came a bit later when I was twelve, with a baby blanket.
Later, I got interested in visible mending and added the Japanese mending technique of Sashiko to my existing darning skills, enabling me to repair a very wide range of holey textiles!
Being creative helps me feel good about life and I love to help others find ways of expressing their own creativity too. I take great pleasure from seeing students progress and in their joy at their achievements.
I teach crochet, darning and knitting in classes of up to five people. I also offer one-to-one tuition at £20 an hour.
