Raw Edge Applique Lamp Shade Workshop

Learn raw edge applique with Kathleen Laurel Sage and make your own lampshade cover.

6 hours Class size 1 to 3 guests       £39

At this workshop, you will use raw-edged machine-embroidered appliqué to create your own, one-of-a-kind lampshade. The technique embraces imperfection and texture, giving fabric designs a relaxed, organic look and using fabric choices that suggest flower borders, cosy dwellings, and garden borders.
Unlike traditional appliqué—where the edges of fabric are turned under and stitched neatly—raw-edged appliqué leaves the fabric edges exposed. Over time, these edges fray slightly, adding depth, softness, and a sense of movement to the design.
This method is very popular in quilting and contemporary embroidery because it is both visually expressive and relatively easy to execute. Shapes are cut from fabric and placed onto a background material, securing them with stitching such as straight stitch, zigzag, and free-motion embroidery. The technique allows for experimentation with colour, patterns, types of fabric, and stitching styles and is often combined with other textile techniques like quilting or painting to create unique, mixed-media pieces.
Overall, raw-edged appliqué celebrates a more relaxed and creative approach to fabric art, making it especially appealing for modern makers who value texture, spontaneity, and individuality in their work.
Kathy has been passionate about crafts from a young age, starting with card-making before learning to crochet and sew. She later developed her skills through college courses, achieving City & Guilds qualifications in patchwork, quilting, and embroidery, as well as an OCN Diploma in Textiles.
Inspired by flowers and foliage—particularly from her own garden—Kathy creates intricate 3D textile pieces using layered fabrics such as organza, combined with machine stitching. Her work often features beads, wire, stumpwork, and heat techniques.
Kathy teaches a range of techniques, including hand and machine embroidery, goldwork, heat-based methods, and contemporary textile art.
