In this hands-on workshop, you'll master the captivating Japanese art of Raku firing, creating your own stunning ceramic pieces with uniquely beautiful surface effects. You'll craft and glaze various objects like pots and bowls, learning how to achieve remarkable finishes through this ancient technique.
What makes this activity particularly thrilling is its dramatic and spontaneous nature. Whilst conventional ceramics follow predictable firing patterns, Raku embraces the unexpected. You'll watch in amazement as your pieces are drawn from the kiln at a blazing 1, 000 degrees Celsius, then experience the excitement of various experimental approaches, including the intriguing Naked Raku technique.
During this workshop, you'll learn how to:
  • Work with different glazing methods
  • Handle pieces at extraordinary temperatures (safely guided by your instructor)
  • Explore various cooling techniques, from dramatic water plunging to controlled smoking
  • Create distinctive surface patterns unique to your work
The unpredictable nature of Raku makes each piece extraordinarily special—no two works will ever be quite the same. You'll discover how the interplay between fire, smoke, and water transforms your ceramics into remarkable works of art. At the end of this enlightening workshop, you'll take home your own collection of one-of-a-kind pieces, each telling the story of your adventure in this ancient Japanese art form.
What you'll get
You will be provided with 4 individual biscuit-fired thrown pots to glaze and prepare. All glazes, oxides, and equipment are included, as are tea and coffee.

With a fascination for the qualities of clay since taking pottery as an O level at school, I have held an undying passion for the material and have enjoyed working with it ever since. Beginning my adult journey as a studio potter, I have been lucky enough to have spent the majority of my life as an artist working from various studios and completing site specific work, commissions and pieces for sale in gallery and exhibition settings, much of it using clay in one form or another.
Having also gained experience in the field of Sculpture, Fine art and Installation, I have enjoyed obtaining degrees and post-graduate qualifications in these fields, as well as ceramics. It has been, and continues to be, a privilege to teach and lead thousands of people in projects and countless workshops to all levels and abilities.
Since starting Potterydayz, a hands-on learning pottery studio, I now enjoy teaching people many aspects of pottery, particularly throwing on the wheel and Raku firing.
Central to my life is the practice of making.
