Layer, Marble and Press

Layer, Marble and Press

Explore layering and marbling techniques, and finally, we’ll press your pieces or hand shape them.

Join us for a day of hands-on making at this plastic recycling workshop in Hove, where you’ll melt waste plastic, marble your own colours, and create something unique to take home. It’s a practical, creative experience that also explores how traditional craft techniques can be combined with sustainable materials.
No experience is needed. You’ll be guided throughout the day in a supportive environment, with safety and confidence at the heart of the process.
What to expect:
  • Melt and reshape waste plastic into new forms.
  • Create your own marbled colour effects.
  • Make a unique piece to take home.
  • Learn how traditional craft methods can work with recycled materials.
  • Explore ideas around sustainable design and materials.
  • Work in a hands-on, guided studio environment.
Please note:
  • If you take your piece home on the day, it will have a natural edge from pressing or shaping; cutting and sanding can be done later for an additional fee.
  • Health and safety guidance will be provided before each process, and support given where needed.
  • You won’t be liable for accidental damage unless caused by recklessness or negligence.
  • The workshop is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
  • Please let us know in advance if you have any access needs so arrangements can be considered.
  • Children under 16 are welcome to attend as observers with a parent/carer -- please inform us in advance.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your own recycled plastic homeware creation and a deeper understanding of how creative making can support more sustainable ways of working.
What you'll get
  • All materials, tools, and personal protective equipment will be provided to make your unique recycled creation!
  • Make 5 x coasters, or 1 x small tray or 1 x small bowl each.
Knowledge required

We are Louise and Merl, Swedish sisters who have lived in the UK since we were little. We’ve always loved making things, and from a young age were taught to be resourceful, and to love and respect our environment.
Louise started experimenting with waste plastic in 2012 whilst at Brighton University, and started her studio in 2015, a year after graduating. She then spent two and a half years refining the processes and working on commissions, culminating in designing and building a large hydraulic press capable of producing sheets of recycled plastic for larger applications of the material.
Merl joined in 2017 after a huge tabletop project was undertaken, and with her also having an artistic background, as well as having worked in interiors, it couldn’t have been a better pairing. In early 2018, Weez & Merl was founded.
