Join artist Alexandra Woods for a full-day oil painting workshop in Gloucestershire exploring the art of portrait painting. This immersive session focuses on building strong foundational skills while guiding you through the process of capturing the human face with confidence.Perfect for beginners and those looking to develop their technique, you’ll be supported throughout the day as you learn how to mix colour and construct a portrait step by step!What to expect:
- Learn the fundamentals of oil portrait painting.
- Explore form, proportion, and colour in a structured way.
- Work from a live model to develop observational skills.
- Create an underpainting focusing on structure and composition.
- Learn to mix flesh tones using the Zorn palette (ivory black, cadmium red, yellow ochre, titanium white).
- Receive guidance and encouragement throughout the process.

Alexandra has been teaching at New Brewery Arts since 2010. Alexandra will encourage and guide students through the activities, inspiring confidence to have a go and achieve in a fun and friendly setting.
Stemming from many years teaching in schools, colleges and university, Alexandra now enjoys delivering her own courses and workshops. Alexandra’s own artwork ranges from editorial illustrations for magazines, logo designs, large paintings and murals to hand painting illustrations onto 3D objects. Alexandra has been selling her images since 2004, undertaking commissions and exhibiting her pieces both nationally and internationally.

After the brewery’s closure in 1937, the site fell into disuse and was nearly lost to demolition. Thanks to a visionary local group, two of the remaining buildings were restored and transformed into craft workshops, opening as Cirencester Workshops in 1978.
