After talking with a silversmith at a local craft fair I knew straight away it was something I'd love to do. So I started to teach myself with a lot of trial and error! I was using a medium called Art Clay Silver, which is pure silver particles mixed with an organic binder, you can model it like normal clay, then once dry, fire it and the binder will burn away and the silver particles fuse together, leaving you with a pure silver piece.
I then decided to go back to university and learn silver smithing and jewellery after being made redundant from my design role at a local newspaper. I've been running my own jewellery business online since graduating in 2011 with a first class BA (hons) in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery.
I now use both my traditional silver smithing skills alongside silver clay to capture the botanical imprints that feature in my jewellery.
I think crafting is such a mindful activity as you can forget everything else you've got going on in your mind and immerse yourself in the activity. Silver Clay is such an exciting medium and easy for beginners to use, I wanted to start sharing what I'd learnt with others. People are always wowed by how their clay creation turns to pure solid silver!
