A one day introduction to the world of natural dyes, where you’ll will learn how to naturally dye a range of natural fibres using homegrown and foraged plants, and food waste. Hosted at Ria’s home studio and dye garden in North Somerset, the course will be a holistic approach to creating colour from plants, from petal to pigment!
This workshop is aimed at beginner dyers, but those with some experience are more than welcome! Ria will first demonstrate and explain how to prepare yarns and fabrics for the dye pot (scouring and mordanting). We will then dye a variety of natural fibre fabrics and yarns with a variety of dyes, to showcase the potential application of natural dye colour. Several dyeing methods will be explored in order to create a variety of striking effects.
You will leave with lots of samples, notes and the knowledge to continue your natural dyeing journey at home. This workshop is hands on, communal and collaborative. With an intentionally small class size (maximum 6 students), there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from Ria’s vast experience and knowledge of working with natural dyes.
