Modern Footstool Upholstery Workshop

Experience making and doing at this furniture making experience.

6.5 hours Class size 1 to 6 guests       £250 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

If you've ever wanted to know what goes into making handmade furniture, this workshop is for you! Under the guidance of an experienced tutor, you'll learn all the skills and techniques you need to make a beautiful upholstered birchwood footstool to take home with you.
Each person will upholster and construct their own birchwood footstool, using a mix of modern and traditional upholstery techniques. You will be able to select a custom upper & piping colour ahead of the course to make your piece uniquely your own.
With plenty of guidance and advice from your tutor, you'll work in a mixed discipline use studio, from your own table, surrounded by life drawings, sculptures, mosaics and potter's works in a spacious and friendly atmosphere.
Everyone will leave with a completed and beautiful piece of for-life furniture to enjoy for years to come.
During the class, you'll:
  • Work using pre-cut & treated birchwood legs frames & bases.
  • Use natural latex, hair & coconut fillers, which we will cut to form at the Studio.
  • Learn how to use traditional tools including magnetic tack hammers, tack lifters, mallets and regulators.
  • Shape the filler and apply & fix edge rolls.
  • Tension the upper upholstered section with calico and tack.
  • Over the upper in Top Fabric and secure using electric staple guns.
  • Attach the base & legs to the footstool upper and we will all stand back and smile.
What you'll get
  • Everyone leaves with their own upholstered birchwood footstool which can be carried or flat packed.
  • All materials & tools provided for use on the day.
  • Tea, Coffee and of course gingernuts included.
Knowledge required
Beginner friendly - no experience required!
Everyone leaves with their own footstool and a #putyourfeetup guarantee
All activity is entered into at the participants own risk, but we're always sure to keep the 'pointy' things, pointing away from us!
What to bring
  • Just bring yourself and a water-bottle.
  • Wear clothes that you are comfortable in, that you don’t mind getting dirty, catching a thread on & if you have an apron, bring one. Wear closed toe shoes with a good sole as we will be working with metal tacks & hammers, and will be standing most of the day (Good news is we're making a footstool so you are guaranteed to be able to put your feet up when you get home!)

I am a designer maker living and working in East Sussex.
I produce modern upholstered footstools. Useful objects, made well.
My practice is informed by the idea that “If you can’t fix it, you don’t own it”.
Alongside regular upholstery jobs (recovers, repairs, reupholstery), I run Rounded by. making & selling upholstered birchwood modern footstools; using 100% natural & recycled materials, these pieces are made for life, not landfill.
With none of the corners that so frustrate upholstery newcomers, I thought the Footstools made the perfect 1 day workshop experience and now run these monthly at The Paddock Studios, Lewes and as a guest tutor further afield. Folk come, learn, laugh, make & leave with their very own footstool.
I trained as a Prop Maker at Central School of Speech & Drama, and on graduation worked in Theatres & Festivals including The Young Vic, Stephen Joseph Theatre & Edinburgh Fringe. I fell into marketing films, working at Universal and then Paramount Pictures for years, before realising how much I missed making, so began training in traditional upholstery at the Thomas Calton Centre, and then in more depth at The Good Life Centre, both in London.
Three things I know : Never underestimate the power of a biscuit. Measure twice, cut once. It's risky wearing flip flops in the workshop.
