Hello I’m Lisa a Brighton-based abstract artist with over 20 years of experience in the meditative Japanese art of Suminagashi marbling. I first encountered this beautiful art form while studying at Glasgow School of Art in 1997, and it's captivated me ever since. The fluidity, the collaboration between artist and materials, and the endless possibilities of expression drew me in deeply. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to mastering it and sharing this relaxing hypnotic art form with others.
Suminagashi is a practice that truly invites you to be present in the moment. It’s not about rigidly controlling the outcome, but about allowing the process to unfold in ways that feel organic and spontaneous. The ink moves across the water’s surface as we create patterns and images and how to take a print. I’ve honed my own techniques over the years to create one of a kind art works that are both beautiful and meaningful, using careful manipulation and a deep understanding of the materials. The ink moves across the water’s surface as we create patterns and images and how to take a print. I'll share these techniques with you, but also encourage and support you to explore your own creativity within the process.
I’m passionate about teaching because I believe in the power of creativity to take us into the relaxing flow state- the optimal place for are brain to be- where time flys, stress reduces, and we naturally sink into discovering our own personal creative language. I’ve worked with hundreds of students over the years, from corporate teams at well-known companies to individuals seeking creative escape, to zen hens and private groups. I’ve seen firsthand how this practice helps people connect with themselves and their creativity. I pride myself on createing a relaxed, welcoming environment where everyone can feel comfortable exploring their own creative flow. No regular creative nessasary —just a curiosity to see what emerges.
One of the things that sets my workshops apart is my deep expertise. I’ve studied both European and Japanese marbling traditions, and I’ve developed a set of techniques that allow for precise manipulation of the ink while still maintaining the fluid nature of the art. Whether it’s using a single strand of hair to create delicate lines or swishing the water to create dynamic, swirling patterns, I guide my students to create art that is uniquely their own and they can replicate at home.
I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible diverse clients, including Nike, Buff Motion, Women's Refuge, and Fabrica gallery, running corporate wellness workshops that combine creativity, relaxation, and team-building. I’m proud to have developed a workshop that not only teach the art of Suminagashi but also promote well-being and mindfulness in the workplace.
In my workshops, you’ll not only learn the techniques I’ve honed over almost 3 decades but have the opportunity to relax into the creative process and experience the joy of mindful play. You’ll leave with your own stunning prints and a new relaxing creative skill to add to your own personal mental health toolkit with the confidence to continue exploring this beautiful art form at home.
I can’t wait to welcome you into my studio in Brighton (or come join you at your space) for this serene journey of discovery and creativity. Let’s take a moment to slow down, connect with the present, and allow something beautiful to unfold.
