Join this metal embossing class in Stanley and create your own illuminated monogram decorative plaque. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned maker, you'll find a friendly, supportive atmosphere as you explore this historic craft.
Your session begins with a relaxed introduction to the expert's favourite tools and materials. You'll start by making a small practice piece, allowing you to get used to the hands-on techniques of working with metal in a low-pressure environment. Once you're feeling confident, you'll move on to your main project. After drawing out your chosen initial, you'll learn a traditional space-filling method used in medieval manuscripts to create a beautiful, intricate background design.
There's no need for any previous experience, as you'll have plenty of individual attention in this small, cosy workshop setting. You'll be guided through every step – from transferring your design onto the metal plate to mastering embossing techniques and applying an aged finish for a touch of character. You'll even enjoy some hot drinks and cake to keep the creative energy flowing.
You'll finish the session with a sense of pride and a one-of-a-kind metal monogram to display at home. It’s a wonderful way to switch off, rekindle your curiosity, and walk away with a handcrafted keepsake that feels truly special.

Crafts for Wellbeing
Crafts for Wellbeing

I’m Carrie, and I’m an artist and art and crafts teacher based just outside Stanley, north east England. I have been teaching art and crafts since the early 2000s, and have been teaching these with wellbeing in mind since 2014, working with a local social prescribing service. Through personal experience I know just how engaging with art and crafts can bring about a wonderful sense of wellbeing and relaxation. I absolutely love passing on my knowledge and the benefits of art and craft for wellbeing.
My aim is to bring wellbeing through getting creative to everyone. I particularly love to teach absolute beginners and get them started on their creative journey. Rest assured, whatever your art and craft experience, I will guide you through the process and make it as enjoyable as I can for you. I work regularly with people who have long term illness, carers and people who live with depression and anxiety.
Since childhood I have always created art, and it has been a constant throughout my life. My main personal art focuses are printmaking, metal embossing, Celtic knotwork drawing and plein air sketching. Back in the 2000s I worked for a craft company for almost a decade, where I learned a lot of other arts and crafts, so I teach a wide range of skills.
Below are some of the organisations I work with either currently or have worked with on past projects:
Durham County Council – Highlights Rural Touring – Durham Lumiere – Newcastle Carers – Beamish Museum – Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre – Gateshead Art Diamonds - Breathing Space Witton Gilbert - plus many more!
As well as scheduled workshops, you are welcome to book a private workshop in my studio for between 2 and 4 people, or book a workshop for up to 12 people for your group or organisation, hosted at your own venue.
I look forward to welcoming you to a workshop soon!
