David Powel, founder of Davey Makes, is a textile artist based in Whitley Bay and guest maker at April 11 for this patchwork cushion cover workshop in Durham! His vibrant wall art is inspired by the bold colours and playful lettering of fairground signage, reimagined through textiles to create striking and joyful pieces.
There’s no need to worry if you’re new to sewing. Davey will support you step-by-step throughout the workshop, creating a relaxed and encouraging space where you can learn at your own pace and enjoy the creative process.
What to expect:
  • A 4–5 hour guided workshop led by textile artist David Powel.
  • Step-by-step guidance as you design and make your own quilted cushion cover.
  • Support throughout the full making process, from initial design through to construction.
  • The chance to create a cushion cover that reflects your own style and creativity!
  • Sewing machines available if needed (please let us know when booking if you plan to bring your own or would like one provided).
By the end of the workshop, you’ll head home with a beautiful handmade tote bag, new creative skills, and the confidence and inspiration to continue exploring textile projects of your own!

Founded by Bethany Malyan Fisher and Miranda Warmington in 2025, April 11 is a shop, studio and community space that champions the work of new and established makers from across the North of England and Scotland. After moving back to the North East from London, they connected over their shared background in Fashion and Design, and a mutual love for the rich heritage of arts and crafts in the North.
They host a broad range of workshops at the cottage in Fowlers Yard Durham that are either led by co-founder Bethany, or by one of the makers they stock in their shop. With a background in print and textile design, and 15 years designing prints for many well known fashion labels, Bethany is the creative force behind the in-house print and homeware label at April 11.
