Hello! I’m Jo Watson, the founder of Làmhan, a micro-charity based in Callander, at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. Làmhan (pronounced LAAH-van) is the Gaelic word for “hands, ” and everything we do is about hands-on heritage craft, connection, and community.
Làmhan began as something deeply personal. My daughter became Scotland’s youngest traditional kiltmaker at just 16, after years of dedicated training. Watching her grow into her craft — and thrive through access to mentorship, heritage skills, and a strong creative network — made me realise how few young people get those same opportunities. That was the spark that led me to create Làmhan: a space where traditional textile skills are shared, celebrated, and passed on to new generations. We focus especially on working with young people, offering creative, practical opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
There’s nothing like seeing someone discover the joy of making — whether they’re threading a needle for the first time or carefully hand-stitching a garment. Teaching allows me to share not only skills, but the deeper values of slowness, sustainability, and cultural heritage. Our workshops are welcoming, creative, and always rooted in Scotland’s rich textile traditions.
We teach endangered textile skills like hand sewing, mending, and garment construction, always with a focus on traditional methods and the stories behind them. We draw inspiration from the local landscape, language, and materials — connecting craft to the environment and our sense of identity. We’re a registered charity (SC053612), committed to making creative education accessible to all, especially young people. This September, we’re launching our first National Saturday Club — a free weekly programme offering young people the chance to explore craft and design through heritage textiles. We’re incredibly excited to welcome the next generation of makers through our doors.
I’ve taught across communities, schools, and arts organisations, creating spaces for people of all ages to learn traditional skills in a hands-on, inclusive way. Làmhan is a proud member of Social Enterprise Scotland, recognised for promoting cultural heritage and community resilience through textiles. My work with Làmhan has been shaped by decades of experience in education, sustainability, and the arts — always with a focus on hands-on learning and inclusion.
We are also hoping to bring Gaelic back to Callander! We will shortly be starting weekly beginners classes at our studio in Callander for both children and adults.
If you’re looking to slow down, learn something meaningful, and create with purpose, I’d love to welcome you to one of our workshops. Whether you’re curious about sewing, mending, or heritage crafts, there’s a place for you here.
Warmly,
Jo Watson
