Discover the magic moment when wood becomes pliable in this full-day steam bending workshop in London with fine furniture maker Brandon Harrison. You'll learn the science that makes it possible – understanding lignin, wood anatomy, and why there's only a brief window to work with – then put it straight into practice. Pull ash from the steambox hot and suddenly flexible, shape it onto the former before the moment passes, and experience something genuinely unlike anything else in the workshop.
Across the day, you'll master a complete range of techniques: steam bending your hooks, hand-planing the wall bar to a smooth finish, marking and cutting joints that hold everything together, drilling fixing holes, gluing and clamping your pieces, and finishing everything in hard wax oil so the grain stays open and beautiful. There's the visceral satisfaction of working fast and instinctively with the steam-bent ash, then the precision of hand tools and joinery where the construction itself becomes part of the design. Brandon brings the same depth of thinking he applies to his own heirloom-quality, internationally recognised work – trained at Sturt Craft Centre in Australia and Yacademy in Italy, with work recognised at Craft + Design Canberra, Vivid Furniture Design Melbourne, and the Clarence Furniture Prize.
You'll leave with a stunning, functional wall-hung coat hanger – three bent ash hooks hand-joined into a shaped bar, finished and ready to hang – and genuine skills you can build on. It's a day that transforms how you see wood and what's possible when you understand the craft.
