What you'll do
Join Ella and Katie for this one-day introduction to oil painting at The Round Tower in Portsmouth, where you'll find a welcoming space to pick up a brush and play with colour. Whether you're a total beginner or haven't touched a palette in years, this workshop is designed to make oil painting feel accessible and fun.Throughout the session, you'll create two small oil paintings: a classical still life and an expressive cloud study. These projects help you practice both careful observation and more fluid, creative techniques. You'll be guided through all the essentials, including the safe use of solvents, selecting the right brushes, and preparing your painting surfaces. You'll also explore core skills like colour mixing and understanding tonal values, which will help you build your confidence as you see your ideas come to life on the canvas.Taught collaboratively in a relaxed and supportive environment, you'll receive plenty of individual guidance to ensure you're never feeling stuck. There's a break for lunch, and you'll be kept fuelled with plenty of tea, coffee, and biscuits. Since all materials are provided, you can just show up and focus on the joy of creating.By the end of the day, you'll have gained the foundational skills to continue your creative practice at home, and you'll leave with two unique oil paintings that capture your new-found perspective.

We’re Katie Munro and Ella Kilgour, the fine artists behind Paint and Draw Atelier. We started Paint and Draw two years ago with a shared love of representational drawing and oil painting, teaching traditional skills alongside contemporary approaches in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.We’re both working artists based at Hotwalls Studios in Portsmouth and we teach regularly from the historic Round Tower, where we run popular painting courses and sell out life drawing classes. Our teaching focuses on core skills like observation, structure, tone, and colour, while combining contemporary and traditional techniques to help students build confidence and develop their own voice.Paint and Draw Atelier has grown into a friendly, creative community, and we love helping people develop strong, lasting skills in drawing and painting from life
