Introduction to Ethical Jewellery Workshop

An opportunity to learn about the origins and initiatives of ethical jewellery followed by making something new.

6 hours Class size 1 to 4 guests       £150 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Join this ethical jewellery workshop in Winchester and discover how to breathe new life into your forgotten treasures. In a world where mindful consumption is more important than ever, this class offers a positive starting point for anyone looking to make a more conscious choice with their craft.
Your experience begins with a friendly introduction to the history and impact of the jewellery industry. You'll explore the origins of metals and gemstones, gaining valuable insights into both harmful practices and the inspiring initiatives that are making a difference. It's a low-pressure way to learn how your individual choices can push for meaningful change.
The second part of the session invites you to get hands-on with your own collection. You'll learn professional methods to identify various metals, so feel free to bring along those old, broken, or mysterious pieces tucked away in your jewellery box. Whether you're curious about a family heirloom or a tangled chain, you'll find out exactly what they're made of in a supportive environment.
Finally, it’s time to get creative and switch off from the outside world. You’ll select the pieces you're ready to repurpose and learn how to melt or reshape them into something wonderful. While we'll keep the techniques simple and beginner-friendly, you'll have the joy of soldering and shaping your metal into a unique pendant, a pair of earrings, or a beautiful embellishment for a silver ring.
You'll leave this session feeling empowered and inspired, carrying home a meaningful keepsake that's been given a soulful second chance.
Please note: If you don't have any old jewellery to repurpose but would still like to participate, please get in touch and you can use supplied scraps instead.
What you'll get
A finished piece of jewellery. How to identify jewellery and what to look out for. Knowledge on the ins and outs of the jewellery world.
Knowledge required
Open to all - complete beginners and those who have a little experience. The workshop is geared towards the individuals who come along.
What to bring
You will need to bring old jewellery with you; anything you wish to know more about, and anything you wish to repurpose. If you don't have any jewellery to melt, you're welcome to purchase some scrap from me to melt down, but you will need to let me know in advance.
Silver chains and large gold components will be subject to an additional cost, if needed. These costs start at £10; please get in touch via the 'message the tutor button' if you’d like to know more prior to the workshop.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit mucky - try to stick to natural fibres where possible.

I've been making jewellery using a variety of different techniques since I was 12. As soon as I had the chance to study the subject further, I went to a creative arts university, and in 2019 I graduated with a BA in Jewellery from UCA Farnham. I have been teaching since 2020, as well as exhibiting my work up and down the country, and internationally. The pieces I have created have been featured in multiple publications and received a few awards. My latest accomplishment is that I am now a member of the Homo Faber Guide.
