You'll start by getting settled into the space and the studio, and learn about the fascinating origins of this creative and flexible printing technique.

Paper Coating

After some practice and demonstration you'll prepare for printing by mixing your Cyanotype solution and painting it onto paper.

Creating our Artwork

Creating Our Artwork

During the main part of the session, you will create the images that you would like to make prints from. After making paint using binder and pigment, you will use drawing, painting, collage, or a combination to create your final design.

Exposure and Developing

Exposure and Developing

After a break for lunch, you'll use the light box to expose your prints and use water to wash and reveal your finished print. I'll provide you with some blotting paper and packaging, so that you can take them and complete their drying at home!

During this in-depth printmaking workshop, we will learn how to make cyanotype prints in my home studio in Camberwell. I've practised and taught many artistic techniques professionally -- out of all of them, I think cyanotyping is one of the most fun, accessible, and enjoyable.
It can be done in a very controlled environment (as we will do in the studio) or much more simply, with sunlight. Either way, the chemical processes involved create an incredibly intense blue which is so beautiful!
Please note
  • This course is taught in my home studio, which is accessed via a steep loft staircase.
  • If you have difficulty using stairs, I’d recommend you don’t book this session, but please contact me as I will be organising dates for more accessible workshops in an alternative location.
  • We also have a cat, so this course may not be suitable if you have severe allergies.
Take home your own set of unique cyanotype prints and blotting paper, plus a host of new skills to try out again.

FAQ

Where is the course taught?

I have difficulty climbing stairs: Will this be a problem?
The studio is in my home loft and accessed via a steep loft staircase, therefore it is unsuitable for anyone who would have difficulty climbing steep stairs. However, I run the course in an accessible location yearly - please contact me about this and I will send more information.
Do you have any pets? I have allergies to them
Yes, we have a cat who lives with us. If it is a case of the Cat being kept in a separate room please let me know and I will make sure he doesn't visit us during the course.

I'm a British painter and printmaker based in South London who studied at The London College of Communication (UAL) and began my creative career in illustration before expanding into printmaking, painting and sculpture.
Alongside making my screenprint and cyanotype editions, I have illustrated book covers, been commissioned to create artworks for the Royal Maritime Museum, and designed large-scale permanent sculptures. I also teach in schools across London and really enjoy sharing my practice as well as learning from others!
If you are interested in the process of creating a cyanotype, this day-course combines some of the most enjoyable hands-on processes to create one from start to finish. Although this wonderful technique is one earliest photographic types of printing, we will be making our images through painting, drawing, and collage, in ways I have developed over the past 6 years. I've created this course because it is a fascinating and rewarding process, and an opportunity to learn, and to spend a relaxed day being creative.
