Throwing taller forms on the wheel can feel like a real turning point in ceramics, but it often comes with its own challenges. This 1-day workshop is designed for improvers who want to build confidence creating taller, more controlled cylinders and forms on the wheel.
Throughout the day, you will focus on the techniques needed to successfully throw height, including centring larger amounts of clay, improving pulling technique, managing wall thickness, and learning how to support and shape taller forms as they grow. Demonstrations will break the process down into clear, achievable steps with plenty of individual guidance throughout the session.
You will explore common problems such as collapsing walls, uneven thickness, and loss of shape, helping you better understand why these issues happen and how to correct them.
By the end of the day, you will leave with a stronger understanding of technique and improved confidence on the wheel to continue refining in your own practice. You will choose one piece to be fired in our on-site electric kilns after the workshop.
What you'll get
All materials and equipment are included. One piece of work will be kiln-fired with a transparent or white glaze. Firings can take up to 6 weeks. We will contact you when your work is ready for collection.
Knowledge required
This workshop is aimed at improver-level potters who already have some experience using the wheel and can comfortably centre and throw basic forms. It’s ideal for students looking to move beyond beginner techniques and develop more control and confidence when throwing taller pieces. No advanced experience is needed, but a basic understanding of wheel throwing is essential.
What to bring
Please bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
Please remove jewellery and tie hair back.
You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you, but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.
Refreshments are available at our on-site café, Blend, until 4pm.

New Brewery Arts is Cirencester’s creative heart — a vibrant cultural charity housed in the historic buildings of the former Cirencester Brewery.
After the brewery’s closure in 1937, the site fell into disuse and was nearly lost to demolition. Thanks to a visionary local group, two of the remaining buildings were restored and transformed into craft workshops, opening as Cirencester Workshops in 1978.
Its mission is to champion craft — making it, learning it, and supporting the people who do it. Its courses, workshops, makers’ studios, 100% UK-made craft shop, and café all contribute to a vibrant creative hub at the heart of Cirencester.
