Hardbacked Bookbinding 2 Day Workshop Experience in the Cotswolds

Come and immerse yourself in two days of bookbinding at our exciting weekend workshop!

12 hours Class size 8 to 10 guests       £170 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Come and immerse yourself in our 2-day weekend bookbinding workshop on 27th to 28th June. This is a non residential workshop from 10am to 4pm each day. If you would like recommendations for overnight accommodation please get in touch.
You will create two beautiful journals from start to finish and experience of making handmade journals at this beginner friendly workshop.
In this two-day workshop, we will concentrate on making hardback books, and you will make at least two books to take home at the end of the second day.
DAY ONE - will be spent making book blocks.
We will spend some time looking at and understanding
  • Paper grain
  • Hand folding and cutting paper
  • Creating signatures
You will learn how to create the pages for your books, sew them together, look at different techniques and the materials used. Any special extras can be added such as ribbon bookmarks, coloured endpapers or secret envelopes and then secure it all in place in preparation for the following day when we will concentrate on the covers.
DAY TWO - will be spent making the book covers.
Select your book cloth and decorative papers for the covers, and learn how to size and cut the boards and spines.
Your first book will be fully bound with book cloth for that traditional covered look. For your second book, we will use a mixture of techniques to make a more modern style split cover, with a book cloth spine and a decorative paper front and back cover that will make your book unique to you.
Finally, we will bind the book blocks and the covers together, and at the end of the day you will have two beautifully bound hardback books to take home and be proud of.
Unfortunately, if we do not meet the minimum requirement for places this workshop may be cancelled.
NOTE: The Craft Barn is accessed via external stone steps with handrails and may not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Launched in 2014, Lechlade Craft Barn was created by Karen Holland and is based in an old stone barn at Karen’s Cotswold home in the beautiful market town of Lechlade-on-Thames. Lechlade is on the borders of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Oxfordshire not far from Cirencester, Burford and Swindon. The barn is full of character and inspiration, a perfect environment to get crafty!
Karen wanted to share her passion for crafting with others and starting with just 3 or 4 different workshops the demand for more crafting soon increased. Led by Karen and her team of talented tutors there is a wide range of affordable craft workshops to choose from such as crochet, mosaics, lampshade making, block printing, silversmithing, bookbinding, lino cutting, stained glass, pyrography, silver clay, and much more.
All workshops are aimed at beginners and upwards – whether you’re exploring a craft for the first time or topping up existing skills, each workshop is fun and relaxed. Craft your way to happiness with a craft barn workshop or one of the kits available to make at home.
Crafty Parties are a great way to spend fun time with friends or family celebrating a birthday or hen party. Spend a couple of hours or a whole day, even those non-crafty friends enjoy themselves!
Karen has been making things since a small child. At primary school she made a needle case for the Christmas Bazaar, bought it herself and is still using it 50 years later! Having learned how to knit, crochet, and sew at a young age, Karen was making her own clothes by the age of 11.
We all have busy lives, families and work commitments that all take priority. During the Pandemic we found crafting the perfect boost needed for everyone's wellbeing and we should be giving ourselves a little 'me' time to unwind. What better way to do it than crafting!
You're never too old to learn a new skill. Karen has just taught her mother to crochet at the age of 84!
