In this one-day workshop, you’ll create a mixed-media mosaic for your home or garden (you might even be able to make two, depending on the complexity of your design).
You'll get an introduction to the materials and tools you need for mosaic work, and you'll learn to cut tiles, bone china and stained glass.
Choose your own motif to work from, it can be anything that inspires you … a house number, a favourite flower, an initial or something else. Rhona will liaise with you and help you with your design in advance, and then help you translate it into mosaic on the day.
The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to mosaics, or if you’ve been to a previous workshop and would like to further develop your skills, you’re very welcome!
The workshop covers the essentials of working with exterior mosaics.
The relaxed atmosphere encourages creativity, making it an enjoyable day. It's ideal for those looking to develop new skills or for team-building and private events.
This is also a great workshop for team building and private parties. Discounts available for groups - contact us to find out more!
About your tutor
Rhona Duffy loves to share her passion for mosaic and glass with others, and she's taught hundreds of students over the years. She is a mixed-media/mosaic artist who uses broken pieces of pottery, glass, bone china, and ceramics, often incorporating recycled items in her work. She has a contemporary take on mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules – she particularly enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. Rhona’s work is an antidote to the challenges facing us in today’s world, which aims to bring peace and joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona has taught regularly at the Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community – and the Central Scotland School of Craft in Dunblane for several years. She now teaches mainly at Studio 164 Falkirk. Her work is available to buy at Made in Stirling. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years.

Nestled in Falkirk in the heart of Scotland, Studio 164 is the home of Mosaic & Glass, an international magazine and organiser of mosaic and glass events and learning opportunities.
Our studio hosts community classes, workshops, exhibitions, meet-ups, pop-ups, and more, providing a hub for creativity and connection in the Falkirk area. It’s also available to hire – perfect for evening, half-day, one-day or multi-day/week workshops, events, or collaborations.
It was founded by Rhona Duffy, editor of Mosaic & Glass magazine and a local mosaic artist who loves to share her passions and skills with others. She has already been teaching mosaic for several years and she’s very excited to be now bringing a programme of mosaic and glass events to Central Scotland in Studio 164, including community classes, parent and child classes, one/multi-day workshops, meet-ups and exhibitions, as well as hosting experts in mosaic and glass from across the world for masterclasses and talks.
Rhona has created a welcoming space that she wants to share with other local people too, to enable more teaching, learning, connection, creativity, and sharing. So whether you’re looking to hold your own event, or you’re interested in trying something new, we invite you to be part of our growing creative community. We’re looking forward to seeing how the space develops and evolves!
