Free-Motion Floral Fragments Workshop Organza and Soluble Film

6 hours Location Oakley Class size 1 to 3 guests   £39

Explore the delicate and experimental possibilities of free-motion machine embroidery by creating your own ethereal textile fragment using layers of organza, water-soluble film, and beautifully detailed floral stitching.
In this hands-on workshop, you will begin by creating a stripped and layered organza fabric, placing delicate strips of organza between layers of water-soluble film. Using a strong, contrasting thread, you will then use free-motion machine embroidery to draw and stitch a detailed floral design of your choice, allowing the stitching to hold the fragile layers together.
Once the water-soluble film has been removed, the remaining stitched organza will reveal a wonderfully delicate, open, and translucent fabric fragment, with the contrasting floral stitching creating a striking botanical structure.
You can choose to celebrate the piece as a textile fragment or sample, leaving the layers intact and framing it as a delicate piece of textile art. Alternatively, for those who would like to explore further, a soldering iron can be introduced to heat manipulate the fabric, add fine details, or carefully cut around the stitched florals, freeing them from the surrounding organza to create a beautiful freestanding three-dimensional bloom.
During the workshop you will explore:
  • Layering and stripping organza fabrics
  • Working with water-soluble film
  • Free-motion machine embroidery as a form of drawing
  • Creating detailed floral and botanical designs
  • Using contrasting thread to define and highlight your design
  • Developing delicate, open textile structures
  • Removing water-soluble film to reveal the finished fragment
  • Optional soldering iron techniques for heat manipulation
  • Cutting and freeing stitched florals to create dimensional blooms
  • Framing and displaying your finished textile sample
This workshop is perfect for anyone who enjoys experimental textiles, botanical forms, free-motion embroidery, and working with delicate fabrics. It offers the opportunity to explore how stitch can transform fragile layers of organza into an intricate, almost lace-like textile.
Whether you choose to retain your work as a beautiful framed textile fragment or transform the stitched flowers into free-standing dimensional blooms, you will create a unique piece that celebrates the combination of fabric, thread, transparency, and stitch.
Kathy has been passionate about crafts from a young age, starting with card-making before learning to crochet and sew. She later developed her skills through college courses, achieving City & Guilds qualifications in patchwork, quilting, and embroidery, as well as an OCN Diploma in Textiles.
Inspired by flowers and foliage—particularly from her own garden—Kathy creates intricate 3D textile pieces using layered fabrics such as organza, combined with machine stitching. Her work often features beads, wire, stumpwork, and heat techniques.
Kathy teaches a range of techniques, including hand and machine embroidery, goldwork, heat-based methods, and contemporary textile art.
