What you'll do
Ready for a creative escape? Est’s second origami retreat is your chance to fold, relax, and feel truly refreshed. Set in the magnificant Museum of Making in Derby, this retreat combines mindful origami, expressive art, and plenty of time to unwind.Perfect for beginners, this two-day retreat welcomes everyone, no matter your folding skills, and Est will guide you every step of the way, making each project accessible and fun. We will begin with a large whole day project - Est's beautiful new lampshade the "Tessellating Orb". Using intricate folds you will be in creativity heaven & Est will provide a huge choice of papers, to make a lampshade to suit your home. This project will be a great way to begin taking deep breaths in and breathing out the busy nature of the everyday.Artist Deb will bring a playful twist with mark-making and writing, offering a creative outlet that’s all about self-expression. After that, dive into a "free-flowing” project of your choice. You will have unlimited access to Est's origami kits. Equipped to make whatever you fancy and with Est on hand to add extra tips & tricks, this will be a great way to immerse ourselves in a relaxed time of folding.Running from 9:30 am to 5 pm each day, the retreat offers plenty of space and time to create. The retreat will be at Derby's Museum of Making. We will have the Loft space (at the top of the building) exclusively to ourselves. Which gives us plenty of space & gorgeous sunlight. The Museum itself is fantastic & so it's well worth having a browse while we're there! Whether you’re new to paper craft or you're a proficient folder, the two days of origami classes are designed to nurture your inner artist while offering a peaceful, joyful experience. Come solo or bring a friend and discover the magic of turning paper into something extraordinary! Please note: If you need help finding overnight accommodation, do let the teacher know. A private facebook group of people coming to the retreat will be created -- this will enable you to connect with others before the retreat and share tips on accommodation.

It’d be impossible to put a date on it, I have always been obsessed with making things, especially using paper. Even in preschool I remember endlessly making paper homes for my cuddly toys. My parents were brilliant at allowing me to be creative, even though creativity wasn’t something they’d claim came naturally to them. As a source of inspiration, my mum would frequently take me to exhibitions both local and further afield. I distinctly remember being struck by the beautiful work of Bridget Riley when visiting the Tate Gallery and this seemed to spark a fascination with geometric pattern (and Bridget Riley books – of which I seem to have a library).When I was at school I couldn’t get enough of art, design and maths. Which never seemed to make sense to both myself and teachers but when I went to university to study Graphic Design, it quickly became evident that origami marries all three passions together! Throughout my degree and since, I have enjoyed stretching myself with more and more complex models and still find so much satisfaction transforming 2D square sheets into something even more beautiful!At the moment I live in central England with my husband and two small people. I enjoy being a mother by day and a ninja folder by night! I find origami truly addictive and love to give you the folding bug too.Through my journey into origami I have discovered a passion for multi-modular creations. I enjoy celebrating the traditional Japanese art of paper folding while adding a contemporary edge. I have a background in both graphic design and teaching primary aged children, so running origami workshops is one of my favourite things to do.
