Over the five weeks of this workshop, you will learn:
  • Week 1 – What is art journalling is all about and learn how to create a page by 'image clustering' collaged images into a pleasing layout.
  • Week 2 – You will learn how to reate a variety of backgrounds using mixed media techniques, stencils, and spray inks.
  • Week 3 – You will learn how to use tissue paper and pretty napkins to create interesting patterns and textures in your journal.
  • Week 4 – Learn about layering images, stamping, and mark making, and even have a go at creating your own stamps.
  • Week 5 – Focus on working to a theme, pulling together all the techniques you have learned in the previous weeks to creat your own page with your individual style and stamp on it.
This experience goes beyond a typical hobby, offering a wonderful creative escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. You'll finish the course with an enriching new practice that allows for personal expression, self-discovery, and a greater sense of wellbeing. Plus a toolkit to explore further ideas in your Journal!
What you'll get
By the end of the course, participants will have completed several art journal pages, learned a variety of techniques and styles, and experimented with a variety of mixed media. You will have started your own personal Art Journal to explore futher ideas as you progress on your creative journey!
Knowledge required
Suitable for beginners or improvers. No prior drawing skills required.
What to bring
You are required to bring a basic art kit such as a pencil, glue stick, scissors, and water-based paint plus a ring-bound scrapbook or mixed media pad. The pages need to be thick in order to take various media such as paint and collage without buckling. I recommend a square 12x12 inch spiral-bound scrapbook. Similar can be bought from shops such as Hobbycraft, The Works or The Range or online. Please ensure it has white pages! As weeks progress you will be advised what else to bring. Some materials and starter images will be provided for use to get you started. The tutor also has a range of stencils, stamps and ephemera for use.
Add-on available for this class
  • Spiral Bound, white page Art Journal 12x12inch (£7)
You can add this when you book (optional).
Session repeats

This class series runs over 5 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

FAQ

I can't draw well and I am new to art, will this be a problem?
No, you don't have to be able to draw to art journal. You will be shown a variety of techniques which include collage, simple drawing techniques and paint effects. You will develop your own unique style based on what skills you have.
I'm not sure what book to use for my art journal. Can I use an A4 sketch pad instead?
I recommend a sqaure 12x12 inch spiral bound scrapbook because it gives you more room to create and express yourself. Plus the pages are thick and the spiral binding allows for your book to expand. You can work smaller, but you might find this challenging during this course due to the handout images and items you will be given to make your page. You can buy the correct book for the course in the 'optional extras section' for this class. It will be ready for you at the venue at the first session.

I believe that everyone can benefit from engaging with the creative arts. My own life experiences have shown me how important it is to make creativity accessible to all, and to champion its positive, therapeutic impact on wellbeing.
With over 30 years’ experience in community learning and the creative arts, I’ve worked and volunteered with a wide range of organisations and charities. I’m always expanding my skills, gaining qualifications in mental health and therapeutic practices, exploring new methods and approaches within both the creative fields and community wellbeing.
I truly believe that everyone can create. My aim is to offer a safe, supportive space, along with the opportunity to explore and create with a variety of materials plus heaps of encouragement to help you discover your own inspiration, strengths, and creative voice.
