Embroidered Paper Bauble Workshop

Learn to sew and construct paper baubles for Christmas or any other occasion.

2.5 hours Location Manningtree Class size 6 to 8 guests   £30

In this workshop with Sam Luxford, you will learn how to create paper baubles with embroidered designs.
We will start by learning to form the bauble shape with navigation chart paper as a practice exercise.
You can choose from metallic gold paper or navigation chart paper for your embroidered pieces. You can choose if you would rather go Christmas-themed, nautical, or a bit of both!
You will learn the techniques for embroidery on paper and how to embroider into your baubles before forming the bauble shape.
You will likely complete one bauble in the workshop, but the provided materials will be enough to make four, finishing the others at home.
Also included is a kit to continue making paper baubles at home:
  • Felt tile and pricking tool
  • Needle and needle threader
  • 2 skeins of DMC embroidery thread
  • Templates and tools for the baubles
Please be aware that our workshop space is upstairs, and our stairs are fairly steep, but there are handrails on both sides.
You'll leave with a host of new paper embroidery skills, at least one finished bauble, and the confidence to keep creating at home!

Sam is a calm and patient teacher, making the workshop easy to follow and enjoyable from start to finish. She set a lovely pace, allowing everyone to work together comfortably. We first learnt the technique for making the baubles before moving on to the embroidery. I particularly loved being able to take home a little kit and instructions, so I can continue making them at home — I can’t wait to create more for my tree this year! The baubles are wonderfully versatile, and I love that you can create so many different designs simply by changing the colours of the paper and thread. Thank you, Sam, for such a lovely and enjoyable workshop. I’m already looking forward to making more!
  • 5/5 from Kay Lucas, attended Aug 2026: Sam is a great teacher. It was a well run class, Sam had planned everything meticulously. We had a fabulous time making the baubles. Watching three strips of card become a bauble was just magic! We left with all the tools we needed to make more. I enjoyed it so much that I have already made more at home. Thank you Sam!

Hi, I am Sam Luxford, artist and creator behind the NaviStitch Brand. My NaviStitch work is created by hand-stitching on old navigation charts. I started the business in 2013. I was first inspired by a family that had been on holiday and stitched their road route onto an Ordnance Survey Map. Living on the coast and loving the water, I had old navigation charts to work with, and instead of a road route, I stitched an anchor, compass, boat, or other nautical-inspired image.
This is where I developed my techniques for embroidery on paper. The business has evolved a lot in that time and is now run from my shop on Manningtree High Street, where I also have an exhibition and teaching space.
My own work has also evolved a great deal, and I love to work with watercolours and collage. I then embroider into the created artwork. I have developed and curated a set of tools and materials that are a pleasure to work with when embroidering on paper. Until relatively recently, I had been quite secretive about my techniques but decided that it's time to share the skills.
I have been teaching in my shop since 2015 with great feedback from my students. I have also written two books based around my workshops. The books are really a workshop in book format, and I also offer a full materials pack alongside the book, everything you need to create the project in the book, in a letterbox-friendly kit.
I look forward to creating with you soon. Sam
