At Maksla Studio, we believe that practicing art can transform the way we experience the world. Drawing and painting sharpen our observation, calm the mind, and offer a meditative escape from everyday stress. Art encourages us to be present, to focus on what we can shape in the moment, and to see beauty where you previously might have not noticed it.
We also believe that anyone can learn to draw, at any age and from any starting point. Many of our students begin with little or no experience. Our goal is to give you the fundamentals you need to progress confidently — whether you continue with further instruction or practice independently at your own pace.
Our teaching is grounded in the traditional principles of academic drawing and painting, a classical approach that has been used for centuries to train professional artists. This method focuses on building strong foundational skills through a clear, structured process. Students learn to observe carefully, simplify complex subjects into basic shapes, understand proportions, and construct forms with accuracy and intent.
We emphasise the fundamentals that underpin all representational art:
  • Line — how to draw with clarity and purpose, using clean construction lines to build structure.
  • Form — understanding how objects exist in three-dimensional space and how to represent that convincingly on a flat page.
  • Light and Shadow — learning how value, edges, and contrast describe volume and create depth.
  • Measurement and Proportion — training the eye to compare shapes, angles, and distances with precision.
  • Composition — arranging elements thoughtfully to create balance and visual interest.
  • Colour — what makes painting alive, creating an interplay between cold and warm shades.
These classical principles give students a reliable toolkit they can use for any subject — from still life and portraiture to imaginative work. By learning the underlying logic of how visuals are built, students gain confidence, accuracy, and the freedom to develop their own artistic voice.
Our tutor combines the strengths of both classical and contemporary art education. With an early foundation in traditional academic training and a recent Fine Art MA from City & Guilds of London Art School, she brings together two complementary perspectives. This blend allows her to teach solid, time-tested drawing principles while also encouraging a modern, open, and exploratory approach to art-making.
