Having done a PhD using knitting as a method to investigate how migrants create a sense of home in a foreign place, I learned knitting in the UK and coalesced my cultural practice of Rangoli into knitting to create unique transnational artifacts, which I called 'RangKnit'. Here, Rang is borrowed from Rangoli, meaning a row of colors; knit is to demonstrate the practice I used during my practice-based PhD. To disseminate my PhD findings and empower other migrants to feel at home and create a sense of belonging, I regularly host knitting workshops to teach the basics of knitting.
My goal is to build a series of beginner-friendly sessions to share the magic of knitting, then develop these sessions further to an intermediate level where I can teach them how to build patterns and use multiple colors, and then push further to advanced level sessions where I can teach them how to knit a flat 'circle'. Inspired by Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi Shawl formula, during my PhD, I devised a formula to construct beautiful and intricate flat 'circles'.
