Weave your own seat, the traditional Scandinavian way — and leave with a small white oak stool that's made by your hand.
Over a full day you'll weave a seat of twisted Danish paper cord onto a stool frame — the same technique behind classic mid-century Scandinavian chairs. You'll start by driving the L-nails that anchor the cord, then learn the difference between warp and weft as you build up the seat: a foundation layer stretched taut across the frame, then a second cord woven through it, row by row. A hammer and a blunt screwdriver help you to make sure every row is tight for that characteristic crisp, taut finish.
No experience is needed. By the end of the day you'll take home a finished stool — seated entirely by hand — and the skills to weave further patterns or refresh mid-century chairs you have at home!
Across the day you'll learn to:
  • Drive L-nails accurately: spacing and angling nails so the finished weave sits square and even
  • Understand warp and weft: how a foundation layer and a woven layer combine to form a seat
  • Set an even, tensioned warp: winding cord around the frame with consistent tension pass after pass
  • Weave an over/under pattern: building the seat row by row with the weft cord
  • Get a tight, professional fit: using a hammer and blunt screwdriver to pack rows firmly together
  • Splice cord together with low-profile knots: joining new lengths of cord with the join hidden underneath the seat
  • Finish and care for the seat: tying off, trimming, and what a paper cord seat needs to last for years
This course is perfect for learning the skills to add a new material to your woodworking projects, refresh old chairs, or as a gift for someone who would like to learn a new skill!
