Nerikomi is a Japanese ceramic technique in which coloured clays are layered and patterned so that the design runs throughout the clay body rather than being applied to the surface.
As the clay is cut, formed, and shaped, the patterns emerge naturally, creating clean geometric designs and subtle harmonies of colour. Porcelain is particularly well suited to this process, as its white body responds beautifully to ceramic stains, allowing a wide range of vibrant and nuanced colours to be achieved.
The technique requires patience and careful preparation. Much of the work takes place before any object is built, with considerable time devoted to preparing and manipulating the coloured clay through a variety of methods.
I began working with nerikomi in 2011 because it offered a unique way to engage directly with colour, integrating pattern and form into the very structure of the ceramic piece.
