Join this 3-day practical camper van conversion course in Evercreech, near Glastonbury, and gain the essential hands-on skills to design and build your own camper van. This workshop is designed specifically for beginners, whether you've already acquired a van or are just considering a future conversion.
This is an interactive, practical course where you will get comfortable using real tools and materials in an indoor workshop. No prior skills are required – just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
You can immerse yourself in the full 3-day workshop (Saturday to Monday) for three creative, hands-on days to develop your skills from start to finish. If you prefer a slower pace, you can start with Day 1 and then add Day 2 and Day 3 later, spreading them out to fit your schedule. Day 1 is required as your starting point, after which you can complete Days 2 and 3 in any order.
Over the three days, you will cover:
  • Day 1: Introduction & Electrical Systems – Start with a walk-through of the entire conversion process, covering planning, safety, and key considerations. You'll have hands-on access to different components before a practical afternoon session on 12V electrical systems. You will learn to design and integrate a 12V system, connect wires, install fuse panels, build a basic wiring loom, and install USB points, lighting, and water pumps, plus an introduction to testing.
  • Day 2: Metalwork, Diesel Heaters & Plumbing – The morning focuses on cutting holes in van panels and working with metal, including shaping for windows, vents, and options for attaching wood to metal. The afternoon provides a walk-through on choosing and installing 12V diesel heaters, planning water systems, connecting a sink, and working with pumps. You'll also have a practical session on how to safely install a 240v system.
  • Day 3: Woodwork & Practical Building Skills – This full day is dedicated to hands-on woodworking. You'll practise marking, measuring, and cutting wood, learn skills for attaching wood panels securely to the van, and develop key techniques for creating storage units, flooring, and structural elements using essential joinery.
By completing the full workshop, you will gain practical experience in:
  • Van design and layout planning
  • Safety considerations: ventilation, fire safety, carbon monoxide, and crash planning
  • Choosing tools, materials, and insulation options
  • 12V and 240V electrical systems
  • Plumbing and water system installation
  • Metalwork and cutting techniques
  • Woodworking skills for building van interiors
You'll finish the course feeling empowered and prepared, equipped with the foundational knowledge and practical experience to confidently begin your own van conversion.

  • Under 18s can take part if accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also on the course (one adult with each child) but only with prior agreement.
  • There is free tea and coffee on tap throughout the day, and a fridge is provided to keep any food or packed lunches cool.

Scott and Sue, experienced teachers and community workers with over 20 years in the field, have a long-standing passion for upcycling. It was the encouragement from friends and family, eager to recreate the inventive pieces they’d seen in Scott and Sue's home, that inspired them to share their skills. Now, more than eight years later, Scott and Sue offers Black Paw upcycling experiences in their workshop, helping people craft their own upcycled projects and learn skills they can use at home. Recently, they’ve expanded their courses to include van-to-campervan conversions, resin crafting and building fire pits from car wheels, bringing creativity and sustainability to a whole new level.
