Looking to explore a new form of creativity in London? Join us for a 2.5-hour workshop where you’ll experiment with the ancient technique of twining to create your own freeform rattan sculpture.
Using thin, flexible rattan, you’ll be guided through building up shape and structure using just your hands and a few simple tools. This is a playful, meditative process where there are no rules, just rhythm, instinct, and flow. Whether your piece turns out as a delicate tangle, an organic nest, or a bold, geometric form, it will be entirely your own.
This workshop is beginner-friendly and open to all; no previous experience with weaving or sculpture is necessary. You’ll be introduced to the basics of twining and shown how to manipulate the material in a way that feels intuitive and freeing.
Held in our warm, creative studio in Hackney Wick, the session invites you to slow down, engage with natural materials, and explore your sense of form and texture. As you weave and twist, you’ll discover how fibre can be transformed into sculpture, and how calming and satisfying this process can be!
You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind rattan piece to take home, along with a deeper appreciation for contemporary craft and a new way of working with your hands.
What you'll get
  • All materials and tools needed for the workshop
  • A completed handcrafted piece to take home
  • A special hand cream gift as a thank-you

My craft journey:
Hi, I’m Elena Vela, the founder of Vela, a creative atelier that merges art, design, and craft into beautiful, functional pieces. My journey with craftsmanship began in 2017 when I left my role as Senior Art Director at a creative agency in Madrid to explore Asia. That year, filled with vibrant cultures and new experiences, reignited my passion for hands-on artistry. During my travels, I collaborated with local communities, learning their traditional craft techniques and creating my designs along the way. This adventure laid the foundation for Vela, where I transform natural materials into contemporary, meaningful products that tell stories. My passion stems from these experiences and the belief that crafting is not just about making items—it’s about expressing emotions and connecting with culture.
Why I Love Teaching:
Teaching is a natural extension of my work as a designer and maker. When I teach basket weaving workshops, I get to share not only the technical aspects but also the joy and mindfulness that come with creating something with your hands. There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching students discover their own creative potential, and I feel privileged to guide them through that journey. Teaching gives me the opportunity to inspire others, share my passion for craft, and help people appreciate the slow, mindful process that goes into every handmade object.
Something special about my work:
One of the most special aspects of my practice is the combination of materials and techniques I use. After learning ancient weaving techniques in Penang, Malaysia, and experimenting with leatherwork in Spain, I’ve developed a style that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design. For example, my pieces often mix materials like rattan, leather, ceramics, and even climbing ropes, giving them a unique and contemporary edge. What most people may not know is that behind every piece is a story—a memory or a place that has inspired me.
Experience and achievements:
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with students and clients from diverse backgrounds, ranging from individuals seeking creative self-expression to companies looking for unique team-bonding experiences. Since founding Vela, I’ve hosted numerous workshops and collaborated with local artisans. Additionally, my background in design allows me to bring a distinct perspective to my craft.
Whether it's through the products I create or the workshops I lead, my goal is always to inspire creativity and bring more beauty into the world, one handmade piece at a time.
