7 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £115 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

This bookmaking workshop in Bristol is a chance to spend a full day exploring the craft of bookbinding, under the guidance of expert tutor Guy Begbie. You’ll create two unique handmade books to take home: a Dos-a-Dos Softback Binding and an Accordion Page Fold Hardback Case Bound Book.
Whether you’re completely new to bookbinding or already have some experience, this workshop is designed to be accessible. The Dos-a-Dos Softback Binding is a compound binding with tabbed closures. It places two sets of page sections back to back within one cover, creating a structure that can hold two separate narratives side by side. You’ll then move on to the Accordion Page Fold Hardback, learning how to bring together structure, creativity, and craft in a case-bound book.
What to expect:
  • Step-by-step tuition in two bookbinding techniques: Dos-a-Dos Softback and Accordion Page Fold Hardback.
  • Insight into how different structures can shape the way books are read and experienced.
  • Guidance and inspiration from Guy Begbie, an internationally exhibited book artist, bookbinder, and printmaker with over 25 years’ teaching experience.
  • A relaxed and supportive day of making, with time for a one-hour lunch break.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with two beautifully bound books, new creative skills, and a deeper appreciation of the craft of bookbinding!

Frankenstein Press
Frankenstein Press

5.0 (3)

We are Anna and Cristian, the founders of Frankenstein Press, partners in life and parents to two gorgeous children. Our story began in 2005 at the London College of Communication, where a mutual friend introduced us. From the start, our shared passion for printmaking connected us, and over the past 20 years, we have been building our studio—and our lives—together.
In 2014, we acquired a unique French etching press from the late 1800s. This press had a life of its own, traveling with us across stunning locations—from the lively streets of Barcelona to the serene Catalan countryside, and eventually to the vibrant cities of London and, most recently, Bristol. During the move from Spain to London, a technician assembling the press noticed its unusual characteristics. Over time, it had undergone numerous modifications and acquired additional parts. “It’s a kind of a Frankenstein press, ” he remarked, and the name stuck.
Our journey as printmakers took a new turn when we realized we wanted to merge our individual skills into one cohesive identity. Frankenstein Press was born out of a desire to experiment, to play, and to see what magic could emerge when we combined our creative voices with our presses. Today, we work with both our late 1800s etching press and a 1950s FAG letterpress proofing press, pushing the boundaries of what printmaking can be.
From La Garrotxa, Spain, to London in 2018, and now to our permanent home on North Street, Bristol, our studio has become a space of collaboration, discovery, and sheer joy. Frankenstein Press is more than a workshop; it’s a living story of journeys, transformations, and the thrill of creation.
