In this workshop, Lauren helps you improve your dressmaking skills with this Japanese cross-back apron sewing workshop. Known as ‘Maekake’, these practical aprons were traditionally used as work garments and made from old sails for fishermen to wear whilst out at sea.
Over the course of the day, Lauren will expertly guide you through the process of creating your very own beautiful Japanese apron. This beautiful apron features a cross-back and two large front pockets. You will learn how to cut out a pattern from your own fabric, how to use an overlocker, and how to use interfacing. You will sew a variety of seams along with learning finishing techniques.
You will leave this workshop with a beautiful apron that is the perfect garment to serve you in your daily household chores, gardening, or creative endeavours. Comfortable, absorbent, and easy to wear, it is sure to be a wardrobe essential for years to come, representing the importance of making garments to last.
What you'll get
Sewing machines and haberdashery will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you wish. Please bring a standard foot.
Knowledge required
This workshop is best suited for those with a little bit of experience who would like some guidance to help build their confidence in basic dressmaking techniques.
What to bring
You will need to bring your own fabric. Lauren recommends either cotton, linen, denim, or blended fabric. Knitted fabric (e.g. jersey) is not suitable. It is advised to pre-wash the fabric before cutting in order to obtain optimal shrinkage during future use of the apron.
Fabric Quantity: 1.5m - 2m length, minimum 140cm width.
You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you, but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.
Refreshments are available at our on-site café, Blend, until 4pm.

New Brewery Arts is Cirencester’s creative heart — a vibrant cultural charity housed in the historic buildings of the former Cirencester Brewery.
After the brewery’s closure in 1937, the site fell into disuse and was nearly lost to demolition. Thanks to a visionary local group, two of the remaining buildings were restored and transformed into craft workshops, opening as Cirencester Workshops in 1978.
Its mission is to champion craft — making it, learning it, and supporting the people who do it. Its courses, workshops, makers’ studios, 100% UK-made craft shop, and café all contribute to a vibrant creative hub at the heart of Cirencester.
