What you'll do

Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? Do you need a refresher on some skills? Join us for a fun and relaxed textiles workshop and discover top tips and some beginner-friendly basics.

Starting with the basics of knit and purl stitches, you and the rest of the class will progress to ribbing, stocking stitch and more advanced techniques, tailored to your skill level.

Casting on and off will also be covered, ensuring you have all the knowledge to complete your very own knitting project. We will provide plenty of patterns and resources to inspire you to get creative and learn to embellish whatever you decide to knit next!

By the end of the day, you will have learned the essential skills needed to knit with confidence and tackle any project with ease.

Please note:

The Folk House has no level access or accessible facilities.
You must be aged 18 or over.

Shirley has knitted and crocheted since she was a child, as she was lucky enough to have relatives who are all good stitchers. This lead her to completing a textiles degree in the late 90s as a mature student.

Having found that individual good quality knit and crochet items can be expensive to find and buy, she decided she would like to pass on her skills, so started teaching part-time, and has now been teaching for over 15 years.

Shirley’s philosophy is that anyone can produce beautiful and individual items if they have the skills and ideas.

The Bristol Folk House is an adult education centre providing a variety of part-time day and evening courses and workshops for over 18's. The Folk House provides a welcoming environment in which to explore your creativity and learn new skills.

We provide courses and workshops that engage the local community. The cafe provides fantastic organic food and a space to get together before and after classes. It is also open to the public and is the perfect place for those seeking a relaxed and friendly place in Bristol city centre. Live music and festivals happen throughout the year, as well as markets, events and exhibitions.

The Bristol Folk House is part of a charity and we receive no funding from the government, the city council or any other institution and our income is wholly derived from course fees, venue hire, members and fundraising events.

The centre began in the 1870's with the aim of supporting access to education in the community. The first programme of activities was produced for the academic year in 1920-1921.
