Sew Into Your Collage

Sew into your collage and bring the piece to life with hand embroidery.

This workshop with Sam Luxford focuses on working with recycled papers. The base paper we use is made from recycled cotton, and the collage is created from whatever papers we have on hand. If you have some paper you would like to use, please bring it along!
We will start by creating our collage with guidance on how to lay out your design and create your petals.
You will learn the techniques for embroidery on paper and a stitch palette to use in your collage. We will then spend the afternoon stitching into our piece, so you leave with your approx. 15cm square mini artwork.
Each student will produce a unique piece, and your finished piece will be mounted to fit an 8-inch square frame. You don't need any experience to join this crafty workshop—just an enthusiasm to learn a new creative skill! Classes have a capacity of 8 to keep things relaxed.
Also included is a starter kit to take away with you to continue to enjoy paper embroidery when you get home. The starter kit contains:
  • Cork board
  • 4 tapestry needles
  • Needle threader
  • Pricking tool

There is a small car park on Kiln lane which is unrestricted as is all the parking along 'The Walls'. Please be aware that the co-op car park is for their customers only and is restricted to 2 hours. You may find a space on Quay Street but the Jewson's end is time restricted, The Crown end is not, so please do check for signs where you park. Hi, I am Sam Luxford Artist and creator behind the NaviStitch Brand. My NaviStitch work is created by hand-stitching on old navigation charts. I started the business in 2013, I was first inspired by a family that had been on holiday and stitched their road route onto an Ordinance Survey Map. Living on the coast and loving the water, I had old navigation charts to work with and instead of a road route, I stitched an anchor, compass, boat or other nautical inspired image.
This is where I developed my techniques for embroidery on paper. the business has evolved a lot in that time and is now run from my shop on Manningtree High Street, where I also have an exhibition and teaching space.
My own work has also evolved a great deal and I love to work with watercolours and collage. I then embroider into the created artwork. I have developed and currated a set of tools and materials that are a pleasure to work with when embroidering on paper. Until retalively recently I had been quite secrative about my techniques but decided that it's time to share the skills.
I have been teaching in my shop for the last year or so with great feedback from my students. I have also written two books based aound my workshops. The books are really a workshop in book format and I also offer a full materials pack alongside the book, eveything you need to create the project in the book, in a letterbox friendly kit.
I look forward to creating with you soon. Sam
