This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

This session was invaluable and worth the cost.

It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience
  • 5/5 from Janette Toland, attended Oct 2025: Thank you for my session on sewing I shared with Shannon. She was prepared for our time together and was able to share her knowledge and skills around the Hobbycraft sewing machine which I appreciated and will be able to put into practice with my own machine. Shannon also offered information on reading patterns which again will be useful whilst I commence my sewing hobby. Janette
  • 3/5 from Sheena Stuart-Yildirim, attended Oct 2025: Lady was very nice and did offer some helpful tips on sewing however got the threading of the machine incorrect at one point and did give wrong advice on one of the buttons which contradicted the machines instruction booklet, I had to actually prove what I was saying was correct before it was accepted and at that point I lost confidence in her knowledge of the machine. Overall I didn't really find the course helpful or feel that I learned anything new for the time or cost.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Sep 2025: Another fab lesson and progress with my Trousers project. Great teaching from Becky who is letting me read the pattern and deciding the next step, but she is alway on hand to give help and advice. Next lesson is booked to learn more about pattern reading, and completing the next stage of my project.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Sep 2025: Another fab week working on my Mens Trousers project. This project is more about getting used to reading the pattern and discussing the next step. I was really excited to start sewing some of the pieces. This week we made the pleats, finished off the unmarked edges of the Pocket Facing & Yoke Front. I have prepped the panels for my next lesson and can see how the Yoke & Pocket will fit onto the FRONT trouser panels. Becky is always watching to ensure the piecing together and sewing takes place in the right order, and she is also there to give help and advice when needed. You really do get alot from a 1-2-1 sewing lesson.
  • 5/5 from Carol Hindley, attended Sep 2025: Had a fantastic sewing lesson on Tuesday. Having not used a sewing machine for 45 years I was very nervous, The lady was so patient and clear with all her explanations. I would not hesitate to recommend Bolton Hobby craft. I came away with a few extra bit that I purchased that would help with my sewing and they have. If I could give 10 stars I would. Many thanks but I will be back when I move onto the quilting.
  • 5/5 from Jeanette Adamson, attended Sep 2025: Great session. Taught me to thread machine. Basic stitches, button holes and zips. Feeling more confident about using my machine now
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Aug 2025: This was my final lesson completing my "Shorts" project. The last stages were passing the elastic through the waistband, then "Box Stitching" the elastic to strengthen and hold the elastic together, and then thread the drawstring through the waistband to finish. At every lesson there is always something new to learn. I very much appreciate Becky's patience as she is polite and helpful and this is what I like about the 1-2-1 sewing lesson, she is an amazing tutor. I like the fact that you are using the same machine that I have at home. I am now looking forward to my next project and have already bought the fabric and pattern instore and booked my next lesson.
  • 5/5 from Jayne Fairhurst, attended Aug 2025: Lady was lovely and welcoming.helped me with project i was struggling to do.self taught but she fave me great advice and was loads of fun for me.thank you so much
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Jul 2025: Another fab lesson with my sewing project. More hints and tips when sewing and putting the pieces together. Becky explains what the next step is and how it is going to be completed. Next lesson already booked, can't wait!
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Jul 2025: Another fab one 2 one sewing lesson with Becky who has given me so much confidence with my sewing machine. This is now my 3rd project with her & this time I am making a pair of shorts. I have already booked my next lesson and can't wait to start constructing the pieces together. This lesson had more hints and tips about the pattern and fabric, and the sewing machine I use is the same as the one I have, so it is like being at home. This is what I like best about the one 2 one learning process.
  • 5/5 from Laura Brackenridge, attended Jul 2025: Great class! Felt very at ease, could take my time. Bonus being able to take away a pencil case I’d made and some dress making scissors. Would highly recommend for beginners or wanting a little refresher in the basics. Would definitely look into booking onto more workshops.
  • 5/5 from Simone Collins, attended Jul 2025: Shannon was lovely and really helped me with learning and understanding how to use the foot pedal better and holding the fabric and learning about the machine. So glad I went to this class. Would really recommend it to beginners.

  • 5/5 from Nisha Vaghela, attended Jun 2025: I booked this class to learn how to read sewing patterns and the lady teaching me was extremely helpful, she gave me a sewing pattern to cut and practice putting pins in and then she showed me exactly where to sew and what it looked like on a mannequin once complete. I’ll definitely be booking another class to learn more.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended May 2025: I had finished a shirt project at home and wanted help with buttonholes. After 5 practice runs on some waste fabric Becky guided me through the next steps of marking out where the buttonholes and buttons should be placed on the shirt. It was great being able to use the sewing machine in the workshop which is the same one that I have at home. After successfully sewing the first buttonhole, I was then able to complete the rest of them with Becky's help and guidance. I am pleased to say that my shirt is now finished and I can't wait to wear it on my next holiday! Thank you Becky and the team at Hobbycraft Bolton.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended May 2025: I have had a brilliant time learning so much about the stretch fabric I was using for my t-shirt project. I finished it, all with the help and patience of Becky who has been my workshop mentor. I have also gained confidence when using my machine (19s) which is the main reason for booking my lessons with Hobbycraft.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Apr 2025: Another fab sewing lesson with Becky today. The stretch fabric t-shirt is proving to be difficult to work with, but Becky is on hand to give hints and tips especially when things go wrong, and her help and advice is excellent on how to over come those problems with my project. We hemmed the bottom of the shirt and did an optional double stitch on the sleeves that gave them some subtle detail. Next week is sewing the sleeves onto the shirt & collar!
  • 5/5 from Vicki Ferguson, attended Apr 2025: I've had over 10 sessions with Becky and still counting. I really enjoy my sessions with her. I suffer from mental health issues that makes it hard for me to concentrate, but she always gives the best advice and guidance. She's so kind, patient.
  • 5/5 from Gail Walker, attended Apr 2025: I attended a one to one sewing machine class. This was the second class I have taken as I have not used a sewing machine before. Becky was my teacher and was amazing very knowledgeable and patient. I made a cushion cover it was fantastic achievement. I really like the fact that it is one to one and there's no silly questions very professional. I won't hesitate to book another course with Hobbycraft.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Apr 2025: It was another fab lesson with Becky using stretch fabric for my TShirt project. Understanding how the fabric reacted totally different to the cotton fabric I had used previously. I like all the hints and tips Becky provides throughout the lesson.
  • 5/5 from Lynn Ward, attended Apr 2025: Excellent thoroughly enjoyable
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Mar 2025: My next project is to make a T-Shirt with stretch fabric, the fabric was a great find in the clearance section of the store. On this occasion I have understood how to read the pattern and cut out the pieces. Becky was fab as always, giving advice and help along the way. I do like to one 2 one lesson as a total beginner, especially when asking questions. I am now looking forward to completing this project and experiencing the difference with this type of fabric. Next session already booked!
  • 5/5 from Ammaarah Siddique, attended Mar 2025: I finished my first project with Becky and it was a wonderful time. I love being able to work through at my pace and even when little things seem to go sideways, the fact that Becky took the time to consider other avenues means a lot to me. Thank you for a wonderful experience I look forward to my next classes and starting a new project
  • 5/5 from Ammaarah Siddique, attended Mar 2025: I wanted to make my first proper item today - and I had a wonderful four hours with Becky. I managed to learn so much, build amazing rapport and leave feeling quite proud of the progress I made. I always love coming for the sewing workshops at Hobbycraft. Being on the second floor, provides a wonderful atmosphere and I enjoyed every minute that I was there. I'm already ready to book my next classes!
  • 5/5 from Gail Walker, attended Mar 2025: As a complete novice I wanted to have a one to one lesson on my new machine. I learnt how to set up the machine, did different stitches including making a button hole. I also learnt how to sew in a zip which made a small bag that has multiple uses. The teacher was Becky and she was amazing. Very engaging very personable and didn't make me feel silly not knowing anything about sewing. The venue was great as was the materials used. I liked the fact that it was done on a one to one basis away from any distractions. Also the fact that I went home with what I had made and couldn't wait to get my new machine out.

  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Feb 2025: Another fab lesson with Becky. This week I was shown how to attach the sleeves to my shirt project, and towards the end of the lesson I was able to begin the bottom hem of the shirt for completing on the sewing machine. I have booked another lesson which will see my project completed by sewing on the buttons. Becky has been a star throughout and has mentored me to see my wish to make a shirt for my holiday become reality. It's been a fantastic journey from buying a length of fabric and seeing it all come together as a finished item. I am very proud of my accomplishment, all with the help & guidance from Becky. The plus point of all the lessons has been that I have used the same machine that I have at home.
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Feb 2025: Another fab lesson and I can truly see my holiday shirt project is coming together. Becky has been great, teaching me pros and cons of my sewing machine, plus little time savers with my project. The best thing about this lesson is the one 2 one tuition. Becky is very patient and helpful. I've got some homework to do before my next visit, and then hopefully after another 2 lessons my shirt will be complete and ready to wear on holiday!
  • 5/5 from Geoff Gliddon, attended Feb 2025: Another fab lesson with Becky who is very patient and helpful with my sewing project. At this lesson I sewed the interfacing to my shirt, sew my collar together and attached the collar to the shirt. This project is really coming to life now. I have learnt a lot about the pro & cons of using a sewing machine and understanding pattern layout and cutting.
